Paint Tyres?
This is something for the future as we haven't got our own place yet but.......we were thinking of using old tyres for plant containers and wondered if you could paint them to make them look more attractive than the usual black? Don't know if anybody has already done this but I was wondering if it was possible or does the paint fall off after a while? Perhaps we should just keep them black.......any thoughts

I'm certain I've seen this done but I cant remember where. They were piled about 4 high. Most modern primer will adhere to most solid surfaces, then you can topcoat with just about anything, don't forget to show us the result.

Re: Paint Tyres?
I did 4 high this year for strawberries, and it worked well. I didn't get round to painting them, but the grass and weeds soon covered pretty well!

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Re: Paint Tyres?
Thanks oldjerry and boboff. TBH, they don't look that bad just left black (and it's a darn sight easier) but I wondered about the paints staying-power.
As for showing the results I think there will be a long wait for photos as we're not getting very far with our house hunt up here. We're stuck because the places we like aren't habitable and if we bought a place we'd then have no money to do it up. As hubby works from home and needs at the very least an office space we're stumped and I'm very depressed. Our dream is turning into heartbreak as we see properties come and go and we just want to get on with life in our own home

Re: Paint Tyres?
I know this is a touchy subject for some, but I honestly believe at the minute it could be a good thing, look at Renting?
Allot of councils still have "tennant farms" on the books. They can often be a council house style place with some land near by.
Or try and find a house where you can rent the ground next to it? Land owners are keen to rent generally, not so keen to sell, unless for allot of money.
If you are going to need a mortagage, think of it as renting the land, rather than renting the money.
Don't be depressed, home is where you heart is, well, and your pants, socks, shoes & family.

Re: Paint Tyres?
Thanks boboff and we are renting here and it has a HUGE garden but the landlady doesn't want the garden messed around with. So I have all my little plant prisoners waiting to be properly planted, they have been waiting for four years now and it'll be quite a bit longer yet. Sorry for the moan, it's a bad day for me, feeling low. We're very lucky really so I shouldn't moan but the kind of place we want will probably be out of reach but then is it for so many others. Looks like even the tyre potato stacks will have to wait too.

Re: Paint Tyres?
Talk to her, explain what you want to do, if you promice to put it back right, and you give her more deposit to cover anything you might do which would cost to put right, its way way cheaper than moving?? Agree say a half of it first, for a year and then let her inspect, and approve. If the house is clean and tidy, you pay the rent on time etc, I am sure you will have no worries ( I have some property and I would love a tennant who would garden, it costs me to keep it clean at the moment?

Re: Paint Tyres?
Apparently (according to OH, who is a painter!) you can paint tyres with most paints but it will come off in the end...exterior paint might be more resilient. Wish there was an answer to the problem of your home...you must get down about it! I feel guilty now as we are so lucky

Re: Paint Tyres?
Either try using an etch primer first, and then a flexible exterior paint as your top coat, or, look for a zinzer product - bullseye 1,2,3 primer (something like that) sticks like glue- great stuff!
