on the move

Post: # 209840Post ali »

Hello everyone out there in the real green world. Dick (other half) and I will be moving to the Shetlands soon - the sooner the better - and hope to buy a croft. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for us? I would like to either make sheepcheeses or have a herd of goats and form a micro-dairy. We are NOT from a farming background, but do not want to do what we are doing anymore. I'm sure you all know where we are coming from.

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Welcome to ISH :flower:

I wish you all the luck in the world, but can't offer anything practical I'm afraid.

Hi,welcome to the forum,we're on the move too,and have recently sold all the goats bar three that are leaving with us.I think setting up a business of any sort in the current (or any other) time is a big deal.Unless you are experienced in keeping milkinggoats\sheep, I wouldn't dive straight in,far better to spend some of your time (and that will become far more precious than you can ever imagine) bringing in some sort of steady income, doesn't have to be great we've done all sorts of p\t jobs to support this holding(builders merchants are great though you get loads of chuck out stuff you can use!).Then get a few goats\sheep whatever, and learn as you go along, knowing that as long as you break even, you're not going to be in too much grief.Slowly..slowly.. Be prepared to work harder than ever before, and forget about weekends away! It's still good, soon as we've moved we're going to start all over again! Very best wishes.

Hello Ali and welcome. I guess you've done all the research for this move already so I'll wish you 'good luck' with your new life in Shetland. I live in Orkney and have only visited Shetland for a holiday but loved the place. Keep us all informed about how you get on please

Gidday

Going to the Shetlands, sounds real interesting for me down here. What latitude is that. We are about 45 south so just wondering how much closer the the other poll you will be.

Welcome to the board. Can offer no advice whatsoever, but I am jealous of the direction you are taking as I would love to do something similar.
