I'm afraid Real Seed Co lost me as a customer when they put their postal charge up to £7.50 for a packet of seeds, when most UK seed suppliers charge 95p.phil55494 wrote:If not why not breed your own! You don't have to go down the route of doing your own cross either, the nice people at real seeds already have done - http://www.realseeds.co.uk/breedveg.htm
Shame, I was a regular customer of theirs before that.

I hadn't realised the charges for posting out of the UK were that high.
In that case, you'll have to do all the hard work of the crossing and selection yourself.

has instructions if you want to go down this route.

Re: Best flavoured tomato ?
Both my normal tomato and beef tomato have got a serious case of Blossom End Rot and the normal tom which is ripening (which doesn't have BER) looks like it's got green collar anyway
why oh why are regular toms so hard to grow whereas cherries just grow without getting any of these disorders? Anyway will see if the propagated toms from side shoots grow better in the ground than the original plants in pots......
thank god for Sungold, eating them already and they are tasty for a yellow cherry (some are too sweet/bland).

Bit late on this thread but Ive grown toms from Lidl after eating them and found them delicious!! These are small, kind of bullet shape and packed full of flavour. They grew really well this year too (probably the only thing that has!).
Have enjoyed black krim in the past - they didnt grow this year either!

You're not the only one to recommend them, so I bought some earlier on and now have seed ready to sow.chadspad wrote:Ive grown toms from Lidl
Can you tell me how big the plants are, big or small, bush or cordon ?

The ones in pts grew bigger than the ones outside although the ones outside produced more and tastier toms! Theyre not huge plants - but then the toms are only small but plenty of them! Doesnt help much does it lol.

Thanks, that helps a bit.
I (obviously) didn't know if they were small pot plants or huge rambling vines ... sounds like something in between.

Re: Best flavoured tomato ?
One of my cherry toms is this shape and it's called Apero. I can't say it's the same as the Lidl one without a taste comparison but it is more acidic and less sweet than some of the cherries I am growing. It's been interesting doing the taste test between all the toms I've grown this year and the only ones that are really naff - mostly due to being rather bland and mushy texture are the red and yellow pear, which are also very prone to cracking. But I wouldn't have chosen to grow them only I bought a six pack of different kinds of cherry tom plants!
My only complaint is that I don't have a Gardeners' Delight this year to compare all these other tastes to!

Re: Best flavoured tomato ?
I grew some Lidl ones this year - the variety was Chico. Slightly larger than the usual generic cherry toms but quite tasty. Not "Apero" shaped though.
Best tasting this year were Fantasio and Marmande which both produced huge beefsteak fruits with very few pips, relatively thin skins for big blighters and good depth of flavour. I'm going to save some seed from them - as per the instructions on the Real Seeds site - to grow again next year.

The missus is raving about the Black Cherry tomatoes, she says they have an exceptional tang.
