Yay. Finally Chickens!

Post: # 207548Post Jessiebean »

We have just picked up a our hens from a poultry farm ($5 each) and popped them in a coop we have made from spare bits of roofing iron and salvaged pallets. We had to buy some wire mesh for $20 but everything else was recylced/salvaged. the girls are looking a bit perturbed but were so quiet on the windy journey home I was worried they had passed away. Once I had chased one escapee around the yard and popped them in the coop they started making lots of "i've just laid an egg " noises. Poor things have hardly any feathers around their tails, I guess this is because they were intensively farmed barn hens.
They are Hiline browns and I hope they are happy with us!

I have already had an egg... we had french toast for tea- supplemented with "foreign" free range eggs. My darling husband is already wanting to get some more chickens. I hope they go well, we are in contact with a local guy who has rescued many hens and put us onto this poultry farm and is mentoring us (poultry wise!) too. I posted for some help locating hens on another (Australian) forum, whereupon someone there posted a request on my behalf on yet another forum and found this guys email address.... several thousand cyber space miles and it turns out he works in the shop across the river.. we nearly went there yesterday! Truly a small world!
Have just checked on our new girls and they are all snuggled into the one box snoozing happily.
