Bye bye boys and girls...

Do you keep livestock? Having any problems? Want to talk about it, whether it be sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, bees or llamas, here is your place to discuss.

Bye bye boys and girls...

Post: # 205006Post bonniethomas06 »

...I waved our three pigs off this morning. At five and a half months apparently they are big enough and so they are being taken to a nearby organic abbatoir :(

My OH has gone with them to make sure their exit is dignified and done as humanely as possible. I have mixed feelings about this really - I will miss their snuffling and grunting and their lovely little eyelashes - it is also lovely to have something to gobble up your scraps. But we knew this day was coming, so I can only hope things go as smoothly for them as possible.

We also had our first 'table bird' over the weekend - and the cat died last week, so Augst is shaping up to be the month of death!

Still, we have a sausage machine at the ready and as we don't want to freeze the meat and then defrost it to make sausages, and then freeze it again we have to make about 10 miles of sausages in about 5 days!

I think that's the bit that stops me having any livestock - in theory I'd want to eat it the pig/chicken/goat etc but I know I'd get too close and then we'd have yet more mouths to feed instead of them feeding us  I really must get my head round this

And good luck with the sausathon

Pigs are one of my favourite animals so there's just no way I could do it. I've figured out how to get table birds if my new cockerel has done his duty and my hen ever goes broody again, and we ever get any chicks..... I won't be able to eat a chook that I've seen as a chick and watched grow up but I thought we might be able to do swapsies with a neighbour for one of their birds! Well that's the theory anyway.

Hope you enjoy your pork Bonnie.

I'll second that.

I realise it is a hard month for you but I had to laugh..." month of death, still, we have a sausage machine at the ready"

Happy sausage making and bon appetit!!

Reading that again, I can see that the message had returned to the subject of the pigs, which is a relief.

Be brave and strong and remember that if it wasn't for people like you who nurture and raise piglets so that we can have pork and bacon, there wouldn't be any reason for pigs as a species in this world. So you should be proud of what you do. :hugish:

You will have plenty to eat then..... curried cat a delecicy I'm told..... let me know what you think.... of the curry that is.

I've had no problem with using frozen meat defrosted then re frozen after making sausages. Of course this was for personal consumption and I would never ever recomend somewthing that the elf and safty lot would jump on.... besides frozen or very cold meat minces better especially if you have a manual mincer..... just ask my wife.
