The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.
A friend and I have decided that we should learn to fish. Thought I'd start this thread for any keen f-ishers (see what i did there ) to impart knowledge/advice regarding starting fishing.
I'm not an angler myself but am sure there are plenty of people who can help. Also tackle shops are a great source of info though I would go for a beginners rig and work from there. Out of interest are you looking to fish to eat? If so its worth being careful about what and where you catch. Certain species are pretty uncommon (eg grayling) and, in spite of what some well known TV chefs might say, it is a little environmentally irresponsible to fish for such things as the loss of a single adult can significantly affect such small populations. On the other hand, other populations such as chub, dace and roach are pretty prevalent (though again check for your area) and can be tasty.
I'm planning a boat fishing trip with my son in a couple of weeks. They give on board tuition that I'm hoping I can transfer to shore based fishing. Why not try something similar?
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

When ah were a lad, in the dim and distant past, the ONLY coarse fish you could take from fresh waters were pike and eels. I'm not aware that much has changed - except I suspect that eels may be more tightly controlled now, given their relative scarcity, and a few associations have now wised up about pike and don't allow their taking. Sea fishing was uncontrolled, but I believe (I may be wrong) that there are now catch limitations in certain parts of the country.
If you're looking to fish for food, the sea is definitely your best bet, followed by a good trout water (which will cost you, obviously).
