If I put a couple in pots in the conservatory, will they fruit without insects? or do I need to pollinate them myself (ahem..if you know what I mean)

Will Peppers Grow in a Conservatory?
Well, I know they will grow but what I mean is, will they fruit? I'm just wondering if they need to be pollinated by insects. Obviously we don't encourage flying beasts into the conservatory!

If they are in pots then you could pop them outside when they start to flower and that should work. I have also grown tomtatoes indoors and I pollinated them using a paint brush. Get some pollen on the brush and "paint" the other flowers with it.

I give mine a little tickle with my fingertip to make sure the deed has been done - I've got quite a few in my conservatory and they are setting chillies now. YAY!

Re: Will Peppers Grow in a Conservatory?
I had about half a dozen pots in the conservatory last year, didn't worry about pollinating and had loads of fruit.
I think that peppers, along with tomatoes, are pretty much self fertile .. otherwise you would have trouble growing them in a greenhouse as well.
Maybe to be sure, tap the pots now and again to dislodge the pollen the same as tapping tomato stems.

Thanks for that folks. I'll do some shifting of plants tonight. I'll give them a tickle and a spell outside when they are in flower and then hope for the best. Cheers.

Mine are in a conservatory and fruit well enough. I don't bother pollinating them, it seems to happen all by itself. But then I can't keep flying beasties out of mine. They seem to get in whatever I do.
I guess the cat sitting on the windowsill helps too. I suspect she brushes against them regularly.
Cheers

Lol what they said. Though peppers hate me something chronic.
