Hello from south Wales

Post: # 194856Post Pennylane »

Hello  , I have been looking at the site for a couple of days and really love what I see.I moved to this part of the world from London 13 years ago with my two young sons where I used to "Live the good Life" and dream of what I could do with More..and being here, I have made All my dreams come true, with a few more besides!! . A favourite saying has been"Well that would never have Happened in the back garden in london!"
Its been a huge learning curve ,putting into practice all the Wombling and recycling, reusing, renovating skills I can and over the time have changed a farm house, yard with tumbled outbuildings and the 10acre plot ,(all the land that the farmers would not want)left from a huge farm into somewhere where we can call home and often invite others to share.eg.the Venture scouts meet here once a week,,
By taking my time I have found many Treasures, beautiful old tools etc,and by carefully getting rid of all the scrap and rubbish that was exposed once all the greenery had died away made it a much safer place to be for animals and humans....
I have had help from a variety of means, from friends, family, friends who now feel like family, exchange for use of shed or tools, swappies of many sorts,,,to .WWOOF> help where we have met people from all over the world. At the moment I have a friut/veg garden, six sheep , a few chickens and two pairs of geese who are sitting as I write, but have in the past had pigs ,goats and horse, (a retired old mare who gave birth a few months after she was here to a beautiful boy who now lives with a horse mad family across the valley).I have learnt many craft skills but the one that I have really spent time on is Woolcrafts, "from Sheep To Shoulder"..spinning ,using dyes made from plants..and knitting/crochet "rustic" items.

I have often pondered just How many people this place would have needed to make it Run Self Sufficient in days gone by ,and counted around 20 for all the chores to be done...which has made me think Just how Important My Good life in the Garden with allotment was..along with everyone else in the community looking after thier plot, it added up to a lot of land being cared for and helping nature to have a chance, as well as feeding ourselves. My neighbour back then told me of how the neighbourhood looked after each other and shared in the war..his garden was the chicken centre, everyone took scraps to feed them in the hope of an egg.Its heartening to read of so many wonderful Ideas and" Good Life People "Sharing still.
Looking forward to sharing more.Thanks

Hi penny, from 1 newie to another welcome to the site.
We're in Carmathenshire but I originate from Essex and OH from the Isle of Wight. Like you we are seriously into the recycling bit, but often find ourselves the brunt of many jokes because of it. We have chickens, occasional pigs and have just started to rear rabbits.

I'm like you, I'm not that bothered what people think neither is OH really, but it's hard when he has to go to work every day and have the p**s taken because he isn't into the latest gadgets or designer gear. It's a good job there are sites like this and friends that accept you as you are.

Hello red, thanks for the flower

I agree Touchwood, constantly having to be strong Just to get on with life and Be Who you want to be is extreemely waring and sometimes can grind "Us" down to near depression...but I have always found that some folk will not stop until they find Something to have a Pick at just because they can. ..and try to feel sorry for them because they have not got something More interesting in life...Like living the Good Life to distract them.
I have to say I am so lucky to have found a "Tribe of People "that I can feel at Home with Enough to Sustain me through These tough Moments, and so have my children, so things are not as Sad as they used to be.
I have looked at your website and like what you are doing.

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Thanks for all the welcomes ,we seem to have ironed out the wrinkles of me choosing a name that had been used recently
I am enjoying reading all the postings and seeing that there are so many other folk making the most of the Good life in what ever way we can.Its very heartening and companionable, knowing that while I am pottering about in my garden, so is someone else somewhere. I think that is what I miss about alotments, even if you have not seen the work being done you notice that it has been...

Penny can you do us a favour and put your location in your Profile please, as I keep wondering where you are (unless it is in this thread where it says 'hello from south Wales'!). As we are all over the globe on Ish it just makes it easier to respond to questions like "when do I plant such and such".
