Nettle tea

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Nettle tea

Post: # 194979Post Helsbells »

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, there seemed to be several options, anyway thought I would share with you my home made nettle tea. I drink it because it helps with my hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

Basically i pick some nettles, dry them on a low oven, then scrunch them up and store them in a jar, it's tasty and free and I would drecommend it to anyone.

I am sure anyone here can work out how to make it but there is a full tutorial on my blog (below)

Grow Your Own Drugs the other week recommended nettle and chamomile tea for hayfever so I gave it a go and it seems really good. Cleared my sniffles up immediately. My hayfever is so bad that I rely on antihistamines all the time and, often, they aren't quite strong enough so I'm really pleased to have found this.

For hayfever I take local honey in my tea and that seems to help, you get used to the pollen apparently.

Just a little add to the nettle article Helsbells, you shouldn't pick nettles that have grown on contaminated land either as they can pick up heavy metals etc. I have picked nettles and eaten them from an old chemical dump which is now as park, but only once when I did not know and I am still here. However, these things build up in your system.

I love nettle tea, drink it every day. Nice pic Helsbells :sunny:

Just wondering if you know how well they keep their nutrients dried?

I'd like to store some this year (I haven't before) and was wondering whether drying or freezing is best for keeping nutrients and how long it keeps it's nutrients for? :dontknow:

I drink it for iron (and vitamin c so the iron gets absorbed).
