Hello from Australia's Capital!

Post: # 190229Post wildflower »

Hey there,

27yo from Canberra. Hoping to share some of my girlish glee as I get better at vege gardening.
Canberra has quite hot summers and cold, cold winters, so it's the first time that I've lived anywhere that had 'proper' seasons (grew up in the Lismore area of northern NSW. Lived in 'the big smoke' of Brisbane for a few years). It's taking some getting used to, having to plan what I plant and when.

Student full-time, working part-time. I only started studying this semester, so the lifestyle change from working full-time (sleep-work-bludge-sleep) to encorporating work and study (sleep-uni-work-uni-whinge about how I don't have any money-sleep) is a little challenging atm. But I'm loving what I'm studying, and I'm excited about where it can take me in the future, so it'll be worth it in the end.
The vege patch is my guilty hobby. Sometimes I just love going out and looking at it. Makes me pretty proud.

I'm also into textiles. Hoping to add a BA Visual Arts to my current degree next year, if I can convince the Canberra School of Art to take me on. They have a textiles major available through the ANU degree that makes me wet my pants, it's so exciting. I also love printmaking, mainly relief print (lino, and starting to get into simple woodcuts), but also interested in exploring other techniques. I'm also very interested in the current trends in art quilts and the blurring of the line between craft and fine art.

I recently found a 2nd hand, dusty, unloved spinning wheel which is almost up and running. It's an Ashford Trad single drive, and I've worked out that all I'm missing is a brake tension spring! They only cost $1.50 or so, so I've essentially scored a spinning wheel for $51.50 and the cost of some elbow grease. Pretty chuffed!

Well, thanks for letting me ramble. I'm usually a forum lurker, and I love to hear about all of your thoughts.
Keep up the good work!

Hi there, I grew up in Canberra and spent several years living in Brisbane and Lismore. I live in Tasmania now as 4 years of living in the heart of the Gold Coast was too much for me!
I find gardening down south much more rewarding and "proper" due to having seasons and not growing tomatoes all year round (BTW you plant tomatoes after the October long weekend when the frosts are over.. I was horrified when I moved to Brissy and found that this rule didn't apply... and there was no October long weekend up there) There are "proper seasons" in Canberra too (as i am sure you have discovered- fiercely hot and sort of on fire in summer- -5C in winter!).
Spring is beautiful and so is autumn (although I say gloatingly- not as nice as here due to the lack of stylish architecture!)... where abouts do you live? There are many great places to go mushrooming (no not that kind of mushroom.. I know what you arty Uni folk are like!) if that is your thing!
Good luck with your veges and life!

Hi,nice to meet you,I am very happy(and envious) of your new spinning wheel as I am just learning to spin on a hand spindle until I can afford a wheel.I plan on raising some sheep for wool along with my goats.Good luck with your studies and enjoy your garden.Nothing can compare to growing your own food.
