Planting Rhubarb

Post: # 193233Post thesunflowergal »

We bought some Rhubarb crows, I am now looking at planting them out.

The problem is that our soil is very heavy clay ie I can not dig it up I have to ask Mr SFG to do it for me  . So we either need to dig holes double the size of the pot and add sand and compost. Or I put them into a larger pot. What do you all think?

Thanks Nikki

We have heavy clay too, (though I can get a spade in it) and the rhubarb seems very happy, good for water retention I suppose.

It was already in the ground when we moved here so I can't help with advice on putting it in :dontknow:

Hi Nikki

I would definetely try and get them into the ground rather than large pots as rhubarb really can grow huge. We planted two or three crowns about 4 years ago into really hard clay soil, they're growing really well and give us enough rhubarb to freeze down for the whole year.

I can sypathise having the clay soil, when we first moved here it was so bad Dave resorted to using a boulster and chisel to plant a clematis. Found out not only were we dealing with clay but the back garden had been used as a lorry park so ton upon ton of rubble. Nearly 6 years on the ground is improving with the help of tonnes of compost, sharp sand etc.
