Some ish ginger.

Does anyone here grow their own ginger. I bought a packet with a rhizome in from Homeb&$£ but to be honnest it looks like it's dead already. Could I just buy a peice from the market and wait until it starts sprouting?

I'm not sure I want to waste the space or soil on the bit I've bought

Any thoughts on the matter appreciated.

We use a lot of fresh ginger. Yes you can grow your own, just wait until you see a shoot starting to form, plant it up and keep it some where warm and you'll be amazed at how quickly it will grow.

Does it need anything special or just a warm sunny spot on a windowsill?
Also how long before I could harvest from it?

i put mine out side in the middle of summer, but rest of the time it sits in the living room

use a plastic pot though as they grow so fast and can break the pot like mine did

Spring is the ideal time to plant your ginger. Success to growing ginger is to keep it warm so yes a window ledge or conservatory ideal. It will need plenty of water and every 2-3 weeks give a feed with a general pot plant food. You should be able to harvest in the Autumn.

Thats interesting SusieGee, mixed results there. I might still give it a go, i wouldnt have a problem keeping it warm, but having a houseplant in a pot as big as a bucket might be a struggle.

The dog will probably try digging it up or the kids will throw the earth at each other . Who invented kids eh?

Thanks MMM that has made me laugh, but no I'm just plagued by all the neighbours cats in my front garden. I think the hubby would actually strangle me if I bought anymore animals in the house, what he calls the dog and the chickens ( especially when it's time to help me clean them out) needs an X rated certificate.

Mind you it's nothing compared to what I hear some of the 'Locals' screaming at their kids, dogs,partners and random passers by. it's such a lovely area round here
