:lurk:

Hello from Wiltshire :hello2:

Think I will be here needing some help and encouragement, I acquired an allotment, which we have managed to attack (read clear) and thats as far as we have got. I seem to have lost my oomph and cannot get going again

Hi Millie, and welcome!

I know just how you feel, I get those periods where all my "get-up-and-go" seems to have got up and gone... (I always say I'll do it at the weekend, and those weekends are always far too short to get anything done apart from recovering from the week!)

But you are in the right place here, we can kick each other's butts, if only metaphorically, and give some moral support!

Btw, I love that lurker smilie. Have you been lurking a while?

Hi millie and welcome to the forum

Have you thought of really working just one small section of your plot and just using that for the time being. Our first ever plot was an absolute nightmare and we never really managed to get the whole thing in use. Full of couch grass, no proper top soil in fact straight onto clay at some points. We did go up almost every day and really enjoyed it though. One section we ended up calling a wildlife section as we left it. but we got a fair amount of produce from it.

Now, I spose I should be fairer to myself, as not only have we cleared years of grass, and under that was old carpet, but it has been rotovated and we have also acquired a preloved shed on Freecycle, given that a new look and erected it at the allotment. So I guess we have done more than I make out! Heck, and whilst Im at it, I think i should point out that i have provided safe and habitable accomodation for a large number of spiders, and I bet most of them are in the wellies I left in said shed :geek:

I think the issue at the moment is, we have this rather large patch of mud, and it needs something growing in it, and i feel Im neglecting it. Ive not done this before, and i look at the neighbouring allotments, and want to kidnap their carers and force them to help me

So, after rotovating, what next? I mean before I plant something in it lol.

Hello Millie,

I think there are lots of allotmenteers here who will understand about facing a daunting new plot.

Which part of beautiful Wiltshire are you in?

Hi Millie and welcome.

What next? Spread some (preferably organic  ) fertiliser on the areas you are going to plant. Hoe it in lightly. Wait for the soil to dry a bit. Hoe off any weeds that germinate - they are a good sign that the soil has warmed up enough that your seeds will germinate.

Don't worry about losing motivation - that is normal! You've also done all the hard work and the more enjoyable work is what is left!

Hi Millie,

Welcome to SSF.

Blimey, you're in Trow! I live in BOA just three miles away. You were lucky enough to get an allotment, they are like gold dust in these parts!

I know, we were really shocked when they rang up and asked if we were still interested! I put my name down last year and was told I would be looking at at least a 3-4 year wait! Mind you, if you see how neglected some allotments are, I just wish they would hand them back for others to use

Is your allotment in BOA? I used to live there many years ago, and i cant think where there are any?

My husband and I will shortly be "racing" as he wants to do aeroponics, so we thought we would do both and see whose is best

Hi Jo!

Love your blogspot! Its really inspired me to get going again, so thank you 8)

Hubby wants "livestock" at some point, but Im not so sure, I get way too attached to animals to eat them

The closest we get is a dog, 4 cats and a rabbit. Apparently rabbit tastes like chicken (wont be seeing if thats true  ).

Anyway, nuff rambling from me

We dont' have an allotment I'm afraid. There are three plots in BOA and they are all full. It's a pity tho as some of them are not looked after at all and well overgrown. We were told that there was a long waiting list as well. I may just try and put my name down anyway as you've had some luck.

We do have a few bits growing in the garden, but would like more space to grow things like lots of spuds.

Im currently clearing an overgrown allotment

The trick or so my neighbour on the allotments says is to do little and often

I often just spend half an hour and then go back later

Have you thought about what you like to eat Grow that

Thats my plan

I just ordered black mulberry trees To plant in there
