Hi!
Hello to you all! What a fantastic site!
I am Jo from Aberdeenshire. 35, married to Nick with 4 kids - youngest 13 weeks old, eldest 18 and left home. Mum and dad were self sufficientish in their day so I had a good upbringing.
We have a veg garden, chickens and try to live off the land as much as possible - flora and fauna and at the moment we're looking into wind power. We're also just taking on a small field for two goats, two sheep and a pig.
Looking forward to getting to know you all.
PS Who knows about household water filters?

hi there!
we want to install a filter for the household water - to eliminate flouride/other contaminants etc as much as we can. We have no idea what to look for in one - I mean which are the best? is there anyway of making one ourselves? (bearing in mind we are on mains water for at least another 3 years till we move..)

Hi Hillbilly,
Are you sure your water is fluoridated? Last I heard, Scotland was fluoride free, but it may have changed since then. We have plenty of Aberdonians on this forum who will be able to tell you more than me.
Just found this on Google, from 2002:
"The only part of Scotland with fluoride in the water is in parts of Moray where it occurs naturally in the water

If it's reticulated water it will probably be chlorinated. An activated carbon filter should remove it by adsorbtion.

Hi Jo
We are lucky enough to be on a private water supply with no chlorine in it... am in Manchester at the moment though and the first thing I noticed when I turned on the tap was the strong smell of chloride... not had a cuppa since I got here on Sunday evening... can't bear to drink it!!
I've replied to your pm... Keig is not far from me at all... and perhaps we could meet in Alford for a cup of non-chlorinated tea sometime

Hi Hillybilly and welcome to the site. There's plenty of SelfSuffishers living in Aberdeen - don't know if we have any members that are actually FROM Aberdeen though!!
I know what Shirlz means about the water - I think I'm lucky where I live as our tap water is nice tasting. When I was last at my Mum's in Somerset it was undrinkable straight from the tap. Yuck!

Hi Hillbilly
I'm another one of those Aberdeenshironeans... (Although that's probably not a word!
) A bit further south, but temperatures no higher for that (-4.6 last night - at grass level...).
We are on private water, too, and it does taste a bit of chlorine, so I put it through a filter for drinking.
Let me know about that cup of tea you are intending to have with Shirlz in Alford or somewhere - if I'm free, I might make it up there, too!
