Is it possible to grow one's own grain for chickens? [I'm not talking about space or quantity here; just type and methods]. If so, what should be grown and how is it fed to them? Do you just give the whole grains to the chickens, or does it have to be milled first?

Re: Chicken feed
Mine get roughly equal amounts of whole wheat and crushed maize - but they prefer the latter, which is of course more expensive. Apparently it is a good idea to feed whole grains at night as they release their energy more slowly. Mine are free range and get extra kitchen scraps - the love cooked leek greens and potato peelings.
