Home-made peanut butter

Post: # 186013Post vancheese »

Hi people

Peanut butter in Hungary is V. Expensive but peanuts are not! So, Is there a way which I can make my own peanut butter(crunchy or smooth) at home?

There are lots of places on internet with variations on a peanut butter recipe, but what it amounts to is

1 cup of roasted peanuts (roast the raw ones in the shell, then de-hull) to 1 teaspoon of nut oil

Throw the nuts into a food processor (up to about 3 or 4 cups worth) start processing and add the oil slowly, at a ratio of about a teaspoon per cup - but this does vary according to what sort of raw nuts you started with because they contain different amounts of oil naturally.

Then you can add a pinch of salt, and whatever sweetener you like, honey or syrup or molasses etc etc. to suit your tastebuds.

For crunchy peanut butter add some chopped roasted nuts de-skinned and fold into the smooth mix.

It doesn't keep that long in the fridge, and can separate, but just give it a quick stir before spreading and it will be fine.

Have fun

If you have a good enough prcessor, just the peanuts will do, I have made my own before and if you process them enough they sort of liquidise but you need processor with a good blade

It works with any nut too. I make almond butter as we have a lot of almond trees. Just roast, blitz, then salt to taste.

I've only made it a few times and have used a mixture of peanuts (remember to get raw ones) and cashew nuts, plus a few walnuts. I add a little bit of salt, some honey and some sunflower oil. It's really nice. Much better than shop-bought.

We used to be able to buy this from a wholefood shop in Solihull. They had a big processor filled with peanuts and ran it when you wanted some peanut butter. Many moons ago tho, beoreI moved up to scotland so pre-1990.

I remember buying it in Bolland & Harrett ( :sunny: ) in Leeds - ooh, that was quite a long time ago. I think I was still at university, so this would have been sometime around 1987...

I'd definitely have a go at making it with just peanuts, if we didn't have a nice steady supply of Suma's unsalted peanut butter on hand.
