The things I didn't plant!

Post: # 18612Post Millymollymandy »

There are at least 16 potato plants in last year's spud patch, that's not counting the ones I've already hoed off or dug up a few weeks ago! And t'weren't me wot dug over this patch, either! This patch is now destined to be the pumpkin and melon patch........

Talking of pumpkins, I've got three come up so far - but I haven't planted any yet! These appear to have come from the compost. So far happily growing outside!!

Then, there are the endives that are growing in amongst my spinach beet. I didn't sow them either. The previous occupants had endive 2 years ago and a load came up last year which I hoed off. This year I think I might keep one or two.

Wonder what will come up next?

It's nice when unexpected plants arrive in the garden isn't it?

We put our lovely compost on some of our plants last year and got lots of little tomato plants growing in the olive tree pot, the rosemary pot and in the little raised bed we have. These seeds have been in the composter for years!
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

Unless your compost pile gets pretty hot, it doesn't kill the seeds. I'm still pulling up Japanese Quince seedlings 3 years on!

Can or rather "should" you grow potatatos the second year, so to speak? I was told that you shouldn't on account of blight, but my spuds didn't have blight last year so I was wondering if I should just leave the potato plants that are growing and hope for spuds this year (I didn't water them enough last year and all I got was a few marbles!) or should I pull them up?

Sunflowers are the common one for me! What the birds and squirrels don't scoff seem to germinate quite happily. Natch..those expensive sunflower seeds I bought didn't have nearly as good a germination rate! :D
