Hi there everyone. I can't believe I have reached the stage that I'm so into gardening that I have joined a self sufficiency web site. Although I work in a bank in London, my dream is to downsize into a small holding in Devon or somewhere similar and grow veggies. Am kinda managing at the moment but the neighbours' leylandi cast too much shadow over my garden so I never really succeed with much except salad leaves, perpetual spinach and spuds. My root crops are always a disaster, and no matter how much beer I buy for the slugs they always prefer my peas and beans to a drop of T***o's finest Economy lager.
I'm really looking forward to learning from you all... Cheers Andy

Wow a personal mention on an introduction that is a first. Welcome to the site mate. Now if we could find out what disease kills off laylandi and set it off in your neighbours garden....
I have the same problem in the back of mine as it goes, it is north facing and there is a big tree in the neighbours garden, I am thankfull for my allotment.

Hiya Mr Trench and welcome ... we all have dreams ... the fun part i find is learning from what we have currently so we can make our dreams even better
I was just saying to my OH how i could live off spuds ... i think they are my favourite thing to eat ... i did not even realise i have them in almost every other meal!

What a lovely bunch of people, thanks for your kind comments. To clear up a couple of misunderstandings:
1. My name isn't really Mr. Trench. It's Andy. Mr. Trench is an elephant that lives in a garden in a very silly play I like. So no - I was not your history teacher.
2. Hadn't realised I was thanking you Andy - was just signing off! I thought it was odd that I had my own emoticon! :-)
3. I realise I could complain about next door's trees, but I'd much rather keep them as friends and just write off root veg until I eventually move down to Dorset or wherever...
Oh - and I didn't mention that the biggest pest in my garden is neither slug nor evergreen but rather a herd of rampaging hens. I have all my veggies in an extended fruit cage, but my viola, for example, were pecked to tiny green stubs within 24 hours of putting them out.
Ho hum. Will now join the main boards as I'm considering buying a shredder and saw it's a hot topic here at the mo'.
Thanks for such a lovely welcome. Andy.
