Hello

Post: # 18211Post Rohen »

Hi

Found this site by doing allotment search and Poles because Im about to go and see a very very overgrown and shaded site ( but probably worth it because Ive been waiting for 10 months)

Also have this desire not to pay the ridiculous prices of soft fruit and certain veggies that the supermarkets ask for.

Also should I ask that the rent be reduced if the site is completely overgrown and wait until I can clear it before I start paying rent?

Hi Rohen!!

Welcome to the forum. I don't have experience of allotments but surely it's worth a try.

Just had a nosy at your profile - occupation: 'you don't want to know" are you a tax inspector or traffic warden or something

Most people dont want to talk to me after I say what I do so Im not going to say.

Anyway Im not working currently due to politics at work so I have no money and lots of time so perhaps it is good that I have time to work at the allotment... something to get my teeth into even though this is the worse time of year to clear an overgrown allotment.....

The allotment is in London and you can guess how much of a waiting list there is for most of them and to get one even though its an overgrown mess would probably be worth it as long as I dont get a dirty plot notice.

The other thing is that the plot which im going to see on Friday is the furthest away one in the borough from me which might be a problem but will it be too much if its three miles away? Bearing in mind this is London and that driving there is the only option and that the other waiting lists Im on are probably a few years away from getting a tenancy I figured it was a good idea to go and pick the best one of the overgrown plots available.

Hello there Rohen and welcome

Here in Bristol there is a half price reduction for the first two years if you have an overgrown plot. You also said that you are not working, so there could be a half price reduction for that too.

You will have to get in there fast and at least cultivate some of the area to get produce this year. A bit at a time is the best bet, try not to think I have all that to do and think I have dug up to this point instead.Good luck.

hi rohen i think you could get it rent free for a while but you have to negotiate that ,i got mine in july and have only started paying in april.i think you could try and get it rent free for a year and they might turn round and say yes or they may meet half way.mine was a mess but not now but still weeds comong up .i suggest you get down to a carpet shop and get hold of old hessian carpets and cover some.clear an area big enouh for your immediate needs. get two rows of maincrop spuds in before the 1st week in may..clear a bit for runner beans as they go vertical.all the best and welcome

Hi Rohen,

Do we have to guess what you do? I guess you must have worked in a tax office or for the government?

Anyway welcome to SSF and good luck in getting a good 'price' for your allotment. Oh how I wish I could get one here. There's a two year waiting list!

My guess is you're a traffic warden,

Anyway, make sure you take 'before' pictures of your lottie as I find that a great motivator- keep it pinned up to remind you how much you've achieved once its all cleared. Welcome to the gang!

or a bailiff,

Welcome Rohen ... good luck with clearing your allotment ... sure was satisfying to see the results after i cleared up the overgrown garden where we moved in.
As Deb said ... definitely take some before pic's ... you can easily get lost in how much you have actually achieved
I am happy to have a space to grow once again :)
