The power fo the world in the palm of my hand
Power companies, that is
Our local power company is giving me old wooden cable drums for free, which I am turning into planters, so far have made a large potato planter and two small round planters, these go along with the square and rectangular ones I am making from old wood pallets, this week I hope to make two hallf round planters out of a big cut horizontal, fingers crossed will stick up some pics when complete. we are selling these at a couple of christmas markets as present ideas. hope they sell.

Wow! you are a very lucky person - those things cost an arm and a leg over here! You are also very creative! I always wanted a really big one to make a patio table with - well I can dream can't I?

Wow - well done you
a lay-by truck cafe near us has the big ones as tables - looks cool but would never fit in my backyard

Well as promised here are some pics of the potato barrel and the half barrel planters, they were to be sold at our local cafes monthly market, but strange thing happened a person visiting our property saw them and said she wanted them so the half barrel planters have sold, but she has kindly said I can still take thm down to display so I can get some advance orders.
he other great thing is that went to the power company today to look over some 1.8m round cable drums to see if I wanted them, when I said yes they said they would deliver them out on a truck for free. so big hugs to them, plus after christmas I am getting someeven bigger ones up to 2.8m rounds, so lots of work ahead

I love those hg! So talented. I'd never think of doing that with them.
Scottish Hydro never seem quite so generous with their cast offs - I wonder what they do with them. Probably send them to landfill rather than give them away
To be fair though they did leave the old telegraph poles for us when they replaced them last year.
I still have my bits (2 x 1m lengths) - I don't know what to do with them, they look to be coated in something, no doubt noxious, so I'm loathe to burn them or use them in the garden.
Any ideas hg would be gratefully received - you seem to be able to spot possibilities that I don't.

Cheers Green Aura
If they are round ones have them split down the middle if its clean wood inside you could wash them down with turps and them soapy water and cut them into smaller lengths link them with wire and make a garden boarder

Re: The power fo the world in the palm of my hand
I can beat that I couldn't get the weed cutter cable to come out (turns out it was empty) so I decided to switch to a metal blade but could get the line head off, so the wife came out and turned the spanner the other way
Weel took five planters to market today 3 barrels, one box and two troughs came back with only two barrels.
Going to make some wishing well planters next, they'll look something like this when finished (I hope)
