live oak tree acorn harvest

Post: # 173160Post Tommy »

Hi, first time poster here.

Several years ago I picked up a lot of acorns and was going to cook with them, and the bugs ate them first. My live oak trees have an abundance of acorns this year, and I gathered a five gallon bucket full. Found a recipe for pancakes and had them this morning. Making flour seemed like a lot of work so I used them as chopped nuts. I did chew and taste one to see how much tannin they had. They tasted bland. Chopped a half cup and put them in a coffee filter them put in four cups of water to leach out the tannin. The water came out with not much tannin in the pot. I have also read that putting them in a gas oven with pilot light to dry and, kill insects. Think I will try them in banana nut bread next.

Seems like a lot of hard work, but then I hate cooking anything lol

Acorns are best eaten as a bacon buttie....ie they make excellent pig food.

I think Ray Mears cooked them up once on his TV show. I don't think he was too impressed with the taste or the amount of effort it took.

Think he put them in a hessien bag in a stream to get rid of tannins or bitterness.

Oooo... we have an acorn tree on the corner of the driveway.... now we're getting ducks, we should be getting green eggs next year - was this the inspiration for Dr Seuss, do you think?

I was sort of being serious there.... ducks plus acorns equals green yolks.........

So if we get pigs next year, I can pee the family off with the 'I do not like them, Sam I am, I would not eat them in a boat, I would not eat them with a goat'... etc etc......

Loads of acorns here this year but my ducks haven't touched them this time thankfully!

It was me who found out thanks to someone on this forum (Stonehead?) why my yolks had gone green. There's a thread about it somewhere from a couple of years ago.

Does it just affect the colour? Or does the taste change too?
