Spring Onions Flowering

Post: # 175102Post Shelle »

Hi all :)

Hoping I can get some advice on what I should do now that my spring onions are flowering.

Is it ok to leave them go as they are, or should I be collecting the seeds myself to replant?

Cheers,
Shelle

Hmmmm. Are spring onions in Australia a different thing to spring onions in the UK?

I am not sure Mike.

I searched on Flickr and found some pics that look like the ones in my garden: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maleny_steve/3310667562/

The reason I asked, Shelle, is that spring onions, as far as I'm concerned at least, are nothing more or less than onions grown to be picked at an immature stage - so if they're flowering, they're not immature. Does that make sense?

That photo looks like quite a mature onion to me.

How big are the bottom bits (I hesitate to call them bulbs if they really are spring onions)?

I will pull one up tonight after work and have a look ...

Yep makes sense!
They are pretty old! I had them in a pot and then as the rainy season came I put them in the ground and, not going outside much, forgot about them, now they are what they are!

They are onions and you have Spring right now so...

Seriously, I'd try saving the seed; what have you got to loose? If the plants are flowering, Mike is right, they are mature and probably not worth eating.
