Flippin Jamie Oliver!

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Flippin Jamie Oliver!

Post: # 174240Post Urban Ayisha »

Been oggling a plum bakewell tart in the jamie at home cookbook for ages and finally got my act together and got all the ingredients. followed the recipe to the t (which may i add, includes 250g butter - thats a whole packet!! - in the frangipane alone) and i feel like crying. the whole thing is spilling out of the tin (which is the size suggested) and is basically just a big confused mess and looks nothing like the picture. the recipe has clearly not been measured unless ive missed something ridiculously obvious out. i HATE it when recipes have obviously never been tried before, but i expected better from jamie!!! JOKE! not expecting any help really, just thought i'd have a rant. grrrr!
gonna have a big glass of wine to ease the pain as i watch the whole thing fall apart in the oven over the next hour. :angryfire:

I was going to say that suziq. Just because it doesn't look right doesn't mean it won't taste fantastic. I assume you're not entering it into any beauty contest, so who cares what it looks like? It all looks the same once you've chewed it up a bit any way! It happens to us all, but some of us get so used to it, it doesn't bother us any more. Even today, I did a Sunday lunch (I know it's Monday, but we went out for a meal yesterday), and I've never seen gravy looking so anaemic. But it tasted fantastic.

And anyway, if you really can't bear to let anyone see it, you could devour the evidence! :thumbright:

 that really cracked me up rosendula! i will certainly be devouring the evidence for the next week or so at least! ive put a tray on the shelf beneath in the oven and from everything that has dropped off i have 2 smaller bakewell 'tarts' on the go. brilliant!! i am something of a perfectionist but i think im just gonna have to let this one go! on the upside, i made a fabulous pumpkin soup with cumin, coconut milk, chillis and coriander today. made it up and everything! i knew i should have used my glut of pumpkins and made more pie... not try to be clever with this bakewell business!

Remember to note a correction in your book so you use a bigger tin / less ingredients next time!

I just never follow recipes, I can't seem to resist changing something. Had an annoying weekend making Christmas cakes though, had combined a couple of recipes to fit what I fancied and what was available (thats where it all begins), had a note in my little book that one of the recipes made 1 large & 2 small....but it didn't- and worse still I just remembered as I spooned out the 1 large and 1 1/2 small that this happened last year grrr.
Duly noted in the book!
