You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

It doesn't seem to like the veg that I've got in the fridge - french beans, beetroot and sweetcorn. I've got no idea either!

  There's always the old standby: Invent a salad!

On another note, I went to this site and it looks promising, I am going to give it a go and maybe pass a link on to my sister who hates shopping and wasting food.

Thanks,
Martina

It took me ages to realise that I had to check the box to state that I'd read the Terms and Conditions :banghead:

On the other hand, there aren't any Terms and Conditions to read :dontknow:

Added: Oh THERE they are - craftily hidden under the description "Terms and Conditions". Sneaky, eh?

Forget I made this post, please.

Probably the T&C are along the lines of 'Please note: We take no responsibility for the results of mixing French beans, beetroot and sweetcorn together nor the subsequent INTERPOL investigation and submission of files... or food poisoning'

... well I thought it was funny but then I've had a glass of red wine tonight :drunken:

I put in Pork and it gave me fish recipes... so I'm at a complete loss to explain that :dontknow:

grate the beetroot, cut off the corn fro the cob (or empty the tin) into a pan of mashed potatoes and mix together with salt and pepper to taste. You could add a teaspoon of your fave mustard and or some garlic. make into round pattie cakes about 3" diamiter and 1/2 " thick and fry for 5 minutes turning over and browning the other side. Steam the french beans and toss in melted butter and arrange on a plate in a stack and put the patties on the top. enjoy with tomato or brown sauce...

edited to add.....

I use the http://www.bbc.co.uk/food site as they have an ingredients panel so I typed in thbe maous ingredients and about 400 recipies came back. never checked them out but the sites are there

French beans are compost now and I fear the last corn on the cob will be too  but the beetroot is fine. I only pulled it because we had several frosts and I was afraid it would die - and now we are having silly warm weather - silly as in strangely unseasonable and wierd! This really has been a year of yo-yo temperatures and takes a lot of getting used to!!!

Anyway, do I grate cooked or uncooked beetroot? :dontknow: I did make bubble and squeak once from beetroot greens which turned it slightly pink! I use that BBC site as I like the ones that you can enter one veg and it comes up with lots of recipe ideas. This site didn't have any at all for french beans or beetroot!

Just checked and it was UKTVfood site that I used to use, but it's changed into Good Food Channel :dontknow: , full of all flashing and dancing ads which is very, very annoying and become much less user friendly. :banghead:

I've done something similar and I grated the uncooked beetroot and it worked fine - I'm guessing that cooked beetroot would go a bit soggy.
What about Prickly Green Salad for your beetroot?
Grate raw beetroot and an onion. Mix in salt, pepper, herbs, rasins and olive oil. Leave for a bit to amalgamate. Yummy!

I'll have to try that Milims as I've never eaten raw beetroot. In fact I am quite ashamed to say the only thing I have ever done with beetroot is to cook it (or not, as normally I buy the cooked vacuum packed stuff  ) then cube it up and put oil and vinegar on it and just eat as salad.

Then eat a lot and have fun the following day! (yes it WAS confirmed on the telly on the One Show that beetroot DOES go straight through you!) I'm not alone! Even my pee was stained the last time I ate tons of it!

I grate raw beetroot, if young I leave the skin on and only wash it before grating. Cooked I guess it could be grated but like said might mush a bit. Try putting beetroot in cakes as it keeps them moist simmilar to carrot.
Beetroot soup, fry off some onions, a little garlic... of 6 cloves if you are like me... add a stock cube and a pint of water and bring to boil. Put into this, say, 4 good cooked and peeled beetroots and a couple of bay leaves or a bouquet garni and simmer for 20 minutes. Leave to cool, remove the bay leaves / bouquet garni and the nblitz in a food processor... return to pan to warm through and add a swirl of cream and a big hunk of crusty bread.

Speaking of going through the body did you know that a little rhubarb is a laxative but a lot is a constipator ??

( my son often says " dad you arn't half full of sh*t some times) but you never know when it will come up in a pub quiz...

Interesting about the rhubarb Big Al!

Thanks for the 'troot ideas - I think I'm going to have to experiment a bit now. I have plenty of small ones still in the veg patch which I earthed up a bit to protect against frost. It's about the only thing left apart from lettuce so I'll have more time now to play around and experiment!
