What's your favourite Winter meal?

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Could you post recipes for lentil and bean shepherd's pie and lentil Bolognese sauce? I love both these dishes but want to cut out red meat and eat more vegetarian food.
I'm not ignoring your request - it's just that I usually don't use a recipe, so I have to think about this! I'll try to post it sometime this weekend.

No rush Ina - actually just a rough idea of the ingredients would be fine - don't need to know quantities/instructions....

MMM, a couple of things about making chapati, one you might like to try occassionally - use boiling water for a lighter fluffier chapati and do you know how to roll a chapati to make it a neat round circle? Simply press slightly harder on one side of the rolling pin (easier with a rolling pin with handles), roll only in one direction, forward, the chapati should turn (rotate) a little by itself, keep rolling in one direction slightly pressing on one side and the chapati will continue to rotate, forming a nice neat circle.
You should see a muslim village girl in Bangladesh make them, they use only their right hand and can turn them out perfectly in the blink of an eye!

Penny liking eating toad with bakewell tart and custard is funny though!

Right-oh, I've read the thread - it's funny looking back. I've probably not made chapatis since actually! I like your advice about rolling them out though. :thumbright:

MMM, sorry hadn't clocked your thread was 4 years old. The other thing is to make some chapati and spread some butter between them and then roll them together to get a flaky pastry effect, paratha. Another alternative is to sandwich some chopped up vegetables between two chapati, very small bits of cauliflower with herbs are good, and then rolling again and cooking. These are all very quick, hot, tasty snacks, especially with wholemeal flour, that can be made in a few minutes - and great if you don't have any bread in the house.

belly pork casserole, in fact there in one sitting in the oven on a low heat right at this very moment, and it smells delish!!!

If it wasn't for the boys it would be with mustard mash, but I suppose I'll have to make do with boiled pots. Boy I can't wait till 5 o'clock

Unfortnately having cooked the perfect winter meal this morning it has turned into a really nice bright sunny and not too cold day here, quite fancy something summery like salad on days like this
the ever growing luvpie household currently contains, 4 boys, 4 chickens, 2 cats, 2 rabbits, 4 fish, an empty tropical fish tank waiting new arrivals, now are we daft to look at our broody hen thinking, if we got some fertilised eggs........

Curry of any description, but absolute fave is butternut squash and coconut (really spicy though, none of that korma-strength rubbish!)

Or a big bowl of veggie chilli with some chilli cornbread.

Or maybe a big pile of sweet roasted veggies with a pile of quinoa.

I'm easily pleased
