Christmas Potatoes

Post: # 170353Post GrowerNewbie »

Hi,

I planted some King Edward and 'salad' (not sure what they were!) in early August in the hope that I could possibly be eating my own potatoes in time for Christmas.

I've put the majority in a raised bed and one in its own (long and high) pot. All seem to be doing well except I know (well I read :geek: ) the salad should be harvested after approx 70days which is in the next couple of weeks, while the King Edward is main crop and should be left for at least another 60days. So my problem is - which is which??? There doesn't seem to be any real discernible difference to the leaves or stalks to help me identify which I should harvest and which I should leave.

The plants have gown massively and are approx 1-2 feet high even though I keep raising the sides of the bed and fill it further with compost / soil.

Any advice?

if your soil is lite enough can you gently dig down by hand and find a spud pull it out to see wot it is or just pick a plant at random dig it up and eat the spuds if their main crop they will be small ,if its salad and it gets left too long i think they just get big (but i could be wrong it has been known)

Hopefully, your salad varieties are pure white-skinned - KE have a pinkish tinge. By carefully furtling about, you should be able to grab a spud from the base of each plant and identify it this way. If your luck's anything like mine, the KE will be the last plant you try.

Yeah, it's one of THOSE words, isn't it? It doesn't matter if you've never heard it before, you just instinctively know what it means. I hope!

Cheers for that guys...

Just one more thing, should I keep raising the side's of the bed or just leave the shoots as they are now?
