Muddypause wrote:Dear gad, that's a terrible argument. It's exactly parallel to religious fanatics saying that they have to have as many kids as possible so that their brand of enlightenment will eventually dominate. It's an idea of exraordinary conceit.

As soon as you make the judgement that your kids are more morally entitled to a place here than other people's then we are well on the way to ever increasing circles of strife.

I'm hoping you didn't mean it like it seems.
I've just re-read my entry, and I think I said what I meant - but you seem to have read something entirely different into it.

I don't see the parallels. I'm not a reglious fanatic - this is NOT a religious argument, my faith being silent on the subject. I have two kids, and have had the snip to limit things right there (ooh thanks for sharing Andy). I don't claim to be enlightened, far from it. And did I make any judgement about my kids being more entitled to a place than anyone else's, morally or otherwise? Nope. But they are equally entitled. You seem to have made a few assumptions about my thinking Muddy - are you perhaps trying to line me up with a stereotype based on your knowledge of my faith?

If you accept that there's anything in the nurture component of how people turn out (and I know it's debatable) then my kids - and there are only two so it's population-growth neutral - are going to know a thing or two, are going to make an argument or two, are growing to grow a carrot or two.

If there is to be any hope for our species at all, it must evolve intellectually. How's it going to do that if anybody who really thinks about the problem chooses to terminate their own DNA? Surely that's an argument worthy of a Darwin Award?

OMG I just realised we hijacked cer35's thread! Sorry Cer! Muddy, let's take this outside... *finishes pint and rolls up sleeves*

OoOO Claps Woody are we gonna have some wrestling heheh!
erm where was I before that popped into my head ermm oh yeah!like I said Felix has stated an ever debatable point & it does have its arguements, just how on earth it could ever be *put in place* so to speak is the hard bit.It does interest me as I said before this is my Dads fave subject lol! mind you he had 6 kids.....!!

I think as long as folk think...think before they bring little ones into the world then thats the one of the main points, there are many that give no thought whatso ever to how many they have, fine if you can support them & give them your time but if you cant then maybe its not a good idea, far too many little ones sit on front of playstations etc for days on end with no input from their elders & suposdly wisers...Maybe more effort should be poured into parenting, helping & guiding people, raising kids is hard work & so it should be & there maybe some that need a helping hand sometimes.

For some folk having one or two kids is the thing to do,for others to chose not to have kids is also important, like all things...its about balance....
That wheel turning yadayada & so on,birth & death its got to happen

now where did I put my ever lastinglife elixer...hmmmm
joking!
Brightest Blessings
Woody

Yes indeed. I realise, come the clearer light of day, that you didn't say what I though you'd said. Although that does seem to have applied both ways. To clarify, I wasn't commenting about your own faith or religious position. In fact I wasn't commenting about religion or faith at all; I reckoned I had seen a parallel in what you said with some fundamentalist dogma that we see elsewhere in the world - in particular, I had in mind some attitudes in the middle east, where fundamentalist Israelis and Palestinians both exhort the need to have as many children as possible for the specific reason that their own brand of cultural ethics grow to dominate. To an outsider this is self evident folly, and I am glad to now realise that this wasn't your intended implication at all.

Woah! you turn your back for five minutes, and discover your introduction has turned into a heated debate... :happy7:
You guys obviously think a lot harder than I do.
I think as some of you have said, it's a question of balance. I've pondered the whole population issue in the past. The conclusion I came to was that if I took the arguement too far, the "greenest" thing to do would be to pop myself on a compost heap. I decided perhaps I'd be better off saving the world some other way! Who are we saving the planet for after all? ( not a spiritual question, just a practical one).
Complicated stuff, I'm very glad that I'm satisfied just to be "ish" iyswim.
