the photo of the dog and rabbit has not been entered for the competition due to it being of hunting rather than harvest

I think this discussion is of value, and has questions that need answered.

The mods have, for the moment temporarily, removed the hunting photo posted by ADG.

There have been a few complaints about it, and so it's been moved until we can decide how best to proceed.

It's not clear how close this comes to blood sports, which of course are illegal in Britain and as a forum we can't support illegal activities.

We'll let you all know what's happening when the mods have had a chance to discuss it further.

its a rabbit for gods sake which isnt illegal to catch with a dog no point in putting it back up .I dont think many on here could ever be self sufficient if they cant cope with that pic I also came about this via the wild foods etc section read what the description says hunting etc very very disapointed I take it all reference to ferreting, and shooting will also be removed which btw there are 17 of if you count fishing which is after all hunting in water.Lets not forget livestock farming is lazy mans hunting, its put in the confines of a fence to stop them running to far.

I dont actually *personally* have a problem with the picture, but you must accept others will, which is no doubt why it was moved. We don't all agree on everything, I daresay my pictures of meat from my livestock will upset those that don't eat meat.. etc etc.

however it doesn't belong on this thread, which is a photo competition with the theme 'harvest' - which i think is genrally about growing and gathering than hunting.


Perhaps post it on a thread about hunting, I see no problem with that, and then anyone who objects to your picture will be forewarned that it is likely to contain pictures and and info about hunting. Lovely looking dog btw.

btw the picking of wild FLOWERS is illegal and I have found threads on that also

This is a difficult situation ADG. The mods are caught between a rock and a hard place.

I think the main problem is that many people are looking through this thread to see what people are growing and harvesting and have got a bit of a shock seeing your photo, when they're expecting tomatoes and carrots.

I accept your word that it's all legal, but you must appreciate we have to err on the side of caution, where we're not certain.

I've moved your photo into your other thread on ferreting and rabbiting, where people can view it if they wish. I hope this sorts out the problem for everyone. Those who don't wish to view these photos don't need to go to that thread and those who do can.

I'm not trying to be facetious or stir up trouble, but I would genuinely like to know.
Is allowing 2 Jack Russels to catch rats in your barn considered illegal in the UK ?
If not, where is the line drawn as rabbits to some people are as much of a pest as rats.

proof now you ARE certain i think some of your members are jail house lawers and I repeat I was harvesting the local rabbit population
btw you can check on the above site that it is illegal to intentionally pick or sell a wild flower or plant without a license I can turn this around because the miss informed said I was breaking the law yet i wasnt but how many have picked a wild flower?

I used to get really, really upset even if I saw a squished squirrel on the road, so seeing pictures posted on a site where I had previously felt 'safe' from such sights would have had me running away never to come back. These days, I'm older and a bit tougher and can therefore stomach a lot more, though I can still be sensitive if there's blood, or a sorry expression on the animal's face. So personally, I would prefer not to have to see the picture. That said, I don't think it should be banned because I agree that when hunting for food, the animal should rightly be classed as a 'harvest'. So as someone sat wobbling about on the fence, I think having a link to the picture with a little text to say what the picture contains will give us softies the opportunity to avoid seeing it if we wish. But it shouldn't be banned outright just 'cos some of us are a bit over-sensitive.

I didnt even show a dead rabbit I showed a live one what I am saying is if the pick was so offensive why are any posts on hunting allowed and why was there no uproar on the DEAD rabbits with cats and the picking of wild flowers etc IS illegal yet no one is complaining about the illegality of that yet some people were trying to say my pick was illegal and no its not illegal either to kill rats and I ask has anyone got a problem with killing rats?

I have to say I don't find anything offensive in the picture.. nothing has happened (of course you know it will happen a second or so after the picture was taken), but there is nothing bad in this picture.

I'm glad to say I don't have a rabbit problem here, but if i did, I would want them gone, and this is one quick way of doing it.

I hate rats like you wouldn't believe.. I know everything is sposed to have its place in the great circle of life etc.. but anyone who thinks there are not rats nearby them are in fantasy land.. and if you keep poultry, you are constantly battling them. Each dead rat is a good rat IMHO.

Poultry and rats, well ... yes and no.
I asked the question above about Jack Russells because when I lived in the UK and kept poultry and rabbits, I was inundated with rats.
Every night I would take my dogs out to the sheds and they would have the time of their lives and kill a dozen or so, only to do the same the next night ... and the next, etc.
Here I suffered from the same problem for the first few years to the extent that the rats were literally chewing their way through the solid concrete floor to get in. But for the last 5 years or so I haven't seen a solitary rat, despite me still keeping chicken. No droppings, no chewed holes .. nothing.
Quite why that is I don't know, it could be that the mink have cleared them out, but that doesn't really explain it. Mink travel round the countryside in circles, they clear all catchable living things out and then move on. I think it takes about 4 years for them to come round again and I can't believe that the rat population couldn't recover in that time.
Whatever it is, I'm not complaining, it's wonderful to have a rat free smallholding.

ADG - I think your photos might be a little bit on the 'huge' and 'graphic' side for some of our members (certainly 'in your face') Please bare that in mind when posting the photos.
