From the Ardennes

Post: # 168776Post simplicitykev »

Hi. just joined in here. I was actually looking for a good hawthorn berry recipe and it came up on this site.

Just by way of an introduction.

We have a smallholding in the Belgian Ardennes, a big old pile of bricks and 15 acres around it. We have been in Belgium for 15 years, but found this home 9 years back.

We keep , sheep ( for meat ) chickens ( for eggs and meat ) Goats ( for meat ) and rabbits. Occasionly we keep geese as well. We grow some veg but not enough to be sufficent, that is an area we are working on, but we have veryy poor soil ( good excuse ! )

Our climate is much like the UK, just a bit warmer in summer and a little colder in winter.

We have been into re using, and reducing seriuously for over 15 years.

Look forward to joining in.
Kevin

Hi and welcome!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Welcome to ISH :flower:

The trick with poor soil, (apart from using it as an excuse not to grow stuff  ) is to ignore it & make you own, by composting EVERY scrap of animal dropping, veg peeling etc & grow in that. Raised beds might be a good idea for you, too. (See http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/ ... 29&t=12862)
