... attach files to my posts

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

... attach files to my posts

Post: # 168213Post frozenthunderbolt »

I have several files that woudl have perfectly answered peoples desire for specific knowledge on several occasions, but have been unable to post them.
Every time i try i get the original message screen along with a red header saying "invalid file type pdf" (or similar)

can we or cant we post attachments?

If we can, can we fix the bug or have a list of approoved file types

If not can you remove the option, it's like dangling candy just out of reach!

Text docs have been disallowed from this particular site because they can allow bugs into the system. Most people use this function just to post photos (that's why it can't be taken away!) and I would have thought if your text docs are on the internet, you'd just post a link to where they came from. Unless you wrote the text yourself? In which case, unless they are hundreds of pages long, you could just post the text. :?

we only allow images to be attached to posts.

the reason is fairly straight forward.

Images get displayed within the web browser (IE or firefox)

where as, a .PDF or .DOC file causes another application to run (adobe reader, MS word), these applications can be exploited.

That is the reason why we do not let anyone post anything other than images.

Well you can either post them if they are not too long, like someone did recently with all the documentation she'd collected on rosehips and their use.

Or, if the file is really big, ask anyone who is interested to PM you their email address and you can send it direct to them.

Hope that will work out!
