Caterpillars on brassicas are worse than ever this year

Post: # 167878Post Millymollymandy »

Why did I never have a problem in the past until last year? And now this year the problem is seriously bad! I've now got all three types of caterpillar running riot over my PSB (looks really sickly) and my purple curly kale (looks healthy). Don't ask me what the 3rd type of caterpillar is (the others are the 2 types of cabbage whites). Gad they are just everywhere. :( :( :(

I tried an experiment I'd read about - apparently the butterflies don't like the smell of broom (the plant). So I cut a load off my wild bushes and laid them all around the plants. The conclusion? - it doesn't make a blind bit of difference! :cussing: :angryfire:

I know this sounds daft, but do you think that attracting butterflies with the kind of flowering plants that they like is attracting them to come near my brassicas? It's the only thing I can think of, as I have gazillions of Verbena Bonariensis that just self seeds everywhere and is coming up through all the unweeded bits of my veg patch, like in amongst the melons. In other parts of the garden (flower beds) the cabbage whites are all over these plants along with the other butterflies. Wondering whether the fact that I've got them IN the veg patch is attracting the butterflies into it, then they spot the brassicas? Hmmmmmmm.

Same here MMM. My brassicas look like net curtains. :(

Things weren't too bad until we went away for a week - then it was caterpillar feeding frenzy. Like you, we've three types and now woolly aphids have joined in the destruction. I know what you mean about the flowers - I always let a few leeks run to seed as the bees, butterflies and various other bugs just love the huge flowers. But I'm sure the cabbage whites would find the sprouts and PSB anyway.

There are some allies in the garden though. I saw a wasp fly off with a caterpillar yesterday and there are loads of ladybirds here munching the aphids. Last year my PSB recovered really well but I've never had much luck with sprouts - even when I net them, the snails have a feast. My neighbours sprout plants are HUGE as are his Jersey Kale plants (walking stick kale). Though I think he sprays them with chemicals he's had in his barn since the war!!

I was almost at the point of wanting to blast chemicals at the bloody things myself yesterday as it's so revolting squiding them and my hands go all green and slimy. :pukeright: Is it dry where you are Mrs M cos trying to find the time to do caterpillar patrol every day as well as spending ages doing all the watering is just too much sometimes. :(

We have the same problem here on our allotments. There are twenty plots, all growing PSB, Sprouts, Kale etc, and only two plots have no caterpillar damage. In all innocence, I asked why? Have I never heard of spraying them!! pbf.

I don't blame you Susie. This year (for me) has been really bad for diseases on just about everything so I don't need insect problems too. Strangely enough my nasturtiums are suddenly covered in blackfly but not a single caterpillar to be seen! I've chased the blackfly off my PSB by doing the jam trick (it really does work; also attracted a load of honey bees as well as ants) but now the caterpillars have just moved in instead. You can't win!

Oh and can you believe as I was squiding caterpillars yesterday a cheeky cabbage white landed on the same plant and started to lay its eggs! :cussing: :angryfire:

No rain for weeks here but the dew seems to be quite heavy each morning. I've only been watering the little stuff like salad/chinese leaves and my pots of herbs for the winter. The brassicas are probably a bit thirsty but still, they haven't got as many leaves to support now!

Caterpillar patrol still on-going. I did try to bribe the kids to do it but unfortunately my daughter would want to keep all the caterpillars rather than squidging them.

We've got PSB that has been totally stripped of all its leaves this year. Which is a pain, but now the caterpillars have decided to move inside the house, which is really not very nice. I need a pied piper of caterpillars

they are terrible this year. despite our inspecting and removing, several of the PSB are lace now. the sprouts are doing ok..

luckily the cabbages caulis and calabrese were all harvested before it got really bad. early sowing next year again

This remind me I had a dreadful dream last night about caterpillars and there was a really giant one that I was afraid to squidge so gave it to my husband to deal with. Luckily I then woke up!

Just came on to see if anyone had the same problem and it's the first post!

This is the first year I've noticed caterpillar's and they have pretty much demolished mi broccoli, cabbages etc.

Can I collect them in a jar and then let them free away from the house? Don't feel too good about squishing them!

Do that and the butterflies will emerge and head straight back to lay their eggs on your veggies!
But if you really can't bear to kill them...the choice is yours.

MMM - maybe the dream is "The Revenge of the Cabbage Whites". :shaking:

After losing most of my brassicas to the caterpillars last year, I spent a fortune on netting this year.
Trouble is, the b.....s get in under the netting and then can't get out again. Don't know how they do it. I can't see any gaps!
And, of course, the birds can't get at them to eat them. Caterpillar heaven.
Anyway, my organic scruples are no more. I have now bought some Pyrethrum spray and am about to consign the netting to the far corner of the shed and blast the blighters to kingdom come.

 I'm starting to have visions of rampaging Ishers engaging in chemical warfare on cabbage white caterpillars. :whax:
