Kiwi won't grow
Kiwi won't grow
We have a kiwi which we have moved to our allotment. It wasn't doing brilliant in our garden but started to improve when moved to the allotment. Then after about 2 or 3 weeks, the new growth started to cult and shrivel up. It just keeps doing the same thing and won't grown even an inch. The leaves are brown and curled on the edges but the rest of the plant looks lush green. Can anyone give us and pointers?
Thanks

I don't know about the shrivelling - probably just a result of the disturbance - but, to the best of my knowledge, you're only halfway home anyway. Kiwis, I'm fairly sure, are either one sex or the other - you need at least one male and one female to get any fruit at all. Someone will shout if I'm wrong, though.

Too dry? It's not the right time of year to be moving plants anyway so it probably can't get itself settled at this time of year with sun scorching it before it has a chance to get its roots established. Whenever I dig anything up to move it in summer I put them in pots in the shade for a couple of weeks before I replant. Can you try to shade it?

It depends on the variety Mike.MKG wrote:I don't know about the shrivelling - probably just a result of the disturbance - but, to the best of my knowledge, you're only halfway home anyway. All the established varieties are male and female, but some new hybrids are now self fertile.

Thank you all for your replies, very helpful. MKJ the Kiwi is self fertile so I kow that's not the problem. The reason why I posted the thread about the Kiwi was more based on the fact that teh symptoms it has now haven't changed much from when it was in the garden ,thus the reason for moving it to the allotment. perhaps I should have mentioned that, can't view my previous post whilst I'm writing this so not sure if I did pout it. It never really grew at home. I'll leave it for a year to see how it goes, nurturing it the best I can. If it doesn't do well then I may just buy another female and male plant anyway, the more the merrier I say! I'll get it covered too. of course if anyone has any other info they would like to share none the less it would be appreciated.

Hi again folks. If anyone can add to the responses I've already had it will be much appreciated. Checked it again yesterday and the new leaf growth just starts to go brown around the edges, no sign of pests, it just seems to have stopped growing. PLEASE HELP!

Re: Kiwi won't grow
I suggest you google kiwi diseases to see if it might be a virus or something. I've never grown one so don't know what could be wrong. Are you watering it enough (you didn't say at what time of the year you moved it)? How big is it? The bigger it is the more shock to the system being moved. It helps to give loads of info if you want a diagnosis!

Hi Millymollymandy. We moved the Kiwi about Mayish time can't quite remember may have been a little later. It's just above waist height, I'm 5,5 so hopefully should give you some idea, I'm no good with measurements. Can honestly say that it gets more water when it rains than I give it.

Oh, I thought you'd just done it recently! I've run out of ideas so other than a disease or perhaps you have the wrong soil type?
your best bet is search the internet for answers. It would be worth trying to find out if it is a virus or something before you introduce any more kiwis. This year (for me) seems to be absolutely dreadful for fruit and veg diseases.
