Tomato planting

Post: # 16621Post Andy Hamilton »

I have been a bit late with my planting this year as I was waiting for the chance of frost to go... and it did not seem to want to. So should I still plant my tomatoes from seed now 4th April or should I cheat and buy some half grown ones from the garden centre... or perhaps do both.

You should find that any tomatoes you sow now will catch up, because of the increased light levels. I wouldn't leave it too much longer though.

Which reminds me! I really must get round to figuring out what I want to plant where! I've been putting it off because of the cold weather and a couple of short breaks away but I'm back, it's springing outside and I'm looking forward to getting grubby. :dave:

The lifting of the spirits that we experience when the clocks change is often given as an argument for BST all year and getting an extra hour on top during the summer. However, I have to say I'm not fully convinced; if we hadn't been living with darker evenings (and still seeing them get longer and longer) perhaps we wouldn't feel so lifted by an extra hour!

I would actually vote for joining the rest of Europe - timewise. They are always an hour ahead; if we joined them, we'd have even longer evenings in summer, it would still be light (more or less) at getting-up-time, and we'd have the chance to see daylight in winter, too. At the moment it's generally dark in the mornings as well as the afternoons after work...

I have light from about 8.45am to about 5.45pm in winter. I love it like this!

We have it from about 9 to 3 or 4... If we had European time, we'd still need the lights on in the morning (which we have anyway), but at least we'd see some daylight in the afternoon!

Cheers, yep they are all planted now, 15 plants if they all come up, hopefully I will be posting - what should I do with a glut of toms later in the year:wink:

At least we don't have the same light as some of the scandinavian countries, I don't think I could stick that. As it is, fine by me. If we did not suddenly have the extra hour would our spirits not be lifted at that time also??

Oh yeah?

Actually, at the moment it's not too bad with the daylight. The dark months are definitely over; it's light when I start work, and still light for a few hours after I finish.

The only problem with that is: No excuse not to get stuff done outside and in the garden! :?
