Wool help please

Post: # 161371Post gigglybug »

I have found a lovely pattern for a skirt and I would love to knit it for my daughter, but the pattern uses Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, the problem is its quite expensive and there aren't a great range of colours unless I get it from the US.

Could anyone recommend a similar wool? I think its 24ply (but I might be wrong on that :? )

Thanks :flower:

according to ravelry - brown sheep cotton fleece is 10 ply, 'worsted weight' - 9 wpi

wpi means wraps per inch - if you wrapped it round a ruller, pushing the yarn close together, how many times around the ruller would you go to cover an inch - its a way of estimating how thick the yarn is

so you could look for something similar in worsted or aran weight - ie more than DK less than bulky.

brown sheep cotton fleece is mostly cotton, wth some merino wool, it might be tha the cotton will mean the skirt doesn't give as much as other yarns? personally.. i would go to a yarn shop and look for something in the aran/worsted weight range and try it. if you feel posh you could do a proper tension square.
