You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.
I have never had polenta and spotted some reduced a while ago so I paid my 25p and it has been in my cupboard ever since.
Anyway what I wanted to know is; is the date on the pack a 'use by' or a 'best before' or is it a sell by for shop info?
it is about a month over can I use it or will it be manky?.....Having never had polenta before I am not sure I would know if it had gone bad lol
What kind of polenta is it? If it's the pre-cooked stuff, I'm not sure how well it would keep; if it's the normal, i.e. dry variety (basically ground maize), it would probably keep forever, as long as it's dry, and the mice don't get in...
Personally, I'm not keen on the pre-cooked stuff. The one time I had it (somebody bought it for me), I wasn't impressed at all. Anyway, maybe we have somebody on here from Italy who could give you an authentic recipe?

It is a block.....was just sold with dried goods not chilled or anything.
Maybe I will open it and see what it smells like, the packaging is clear and it looks ok, no mould or anything lol
Sounds like it is the pre-cooked type. Well. You could slice it and fry it, or stick it in a dish with grated cheese on top and heat it in the oven. Doesn't it have instructions on the packet?
I just find it is very bland that way - you need something very tasty to go with it. When I cook polenta from dry, I tend to put some flavour (veggie boullion) in the water, or use half water, half milk - but that's probably not very authentic.
