Onions

Post: # 157392Post Derry »

i bought a set of onions, and have since planted about 50 in the garden (so i got carried away..) theyre all growing well, getting good leaves and growth etc, but im now thinking that we're ganna have a biggest harvest, and therefore not be able to use them all. they were planted in late april

what im wondering is, next year if we grow them again, would it work if i sowed say 2 at the end of feb, and then 2 more a fortnight later,, and keep doing fortnightly intervals? because then we'd get a more spread out harvest time... or would this produce a load of problems such as mould/bolting?

i think theyre the Stuttgarter variety

and another Q.. when will they be ready? im thinking late august?

My red onions seem to flower earlier than I want to harvest the onion. They are watered the same as the whites, is it just reds being like that- they did last year too. Quite a few are flowering now so I've nipped the flowers off. The bulbs are not really swollen enough to harvest- but the whites are almost ready :?

To be fair half a dozen are flowering and that'll last us about a week or less so it's not tragic....and will save me buying any.....doubt they will make it to the freezer (which is full of Gooseberries...where will I put all the other stuff I wonder  )

Last year I made onion chutney too which was Loooovvveeely

In case anyone's interested and you've got onions (or other root crops) that are ready to harvest then according to my biodynamic calendar between Sat 7am and Sun 7pm is the optimal time for doing it - apparently it will improve their shelf life. I'm going to try with my onions and garlic and see what happens.

BTW I'm so glad to have the flowering onion/woody core situation explained...sadly it means I've got a fe oh well, i'll know next year.
