Post: # 156987Post Derry »

so my dads just gone into the garden to get some leaves for his tea. we have lollo rosso red and some cos [the heart forming types]

he had some from the red loose leaf.. and then proceeded to chop the heart off 2 cos'... are they only good for compost now? or will they form a new heart? hes effectively pinched out the growing tip, except he did it with scissors

Don't worry, some of them will carry on growing. Whether they heart up again properly though I don't know. I grow a variety called Valmaine which is 'supposed' to be a cut and come again cos, but if you wait (like I do) for a fully hearted proper cos they don't really 'come again' very well, leastways not in full summer. But any lettuce which is cut for baby leaves ought to keep on sprouting so don't chuck them away!
