I'm not totally convinced it all down to the consumers. I think super markets have for a long time been thinking they are helping by providing fruit and veg out of season. It's this blurring of the seasons that mean we don't get that knowledge of what is the correct season for a particular vegetable of fruit. This is not taught in schools and if you don't grow the fruit and veg yourself how are you going to know.

Some little while back we have a veg box delivered. Could not find a local supplied, but had to go to an on-line one a county away. Daft thing was that the veg all came from this counties field, then got shipped out (down to London we think) packaged up and shipped back.

We gave up with the mixed veg box rather quickly. The proportions of veg were never what we wanted. Lots and lots of cabbage. When we got mushrooms we barely had enough (we like mushrooms).

I was annoyed a few years back about this - it was the year HDRA were doing the supermarket watch survey on organic fruit & veg. I'm not sure when in the year it was, but there were organic carrots from Egypt and non-organic ones from Scotland...

Cloud - perhaps you have room for one of those grow-your-own mushroom kits... Perhaps even a loo roll to grow oyster ones....

we've had two of these this year (my dad bought them for my mom for mothers day.. go figure..) and theyve been quite successful. brown shrooms and white shrooms, probably had about 30 shrooms in total, range of sizes etc, and we thought theyd finished, but we checked on them the other day and theres some baby shrooms starting ^-^

It's on the list of things to do, but I've not seen them recently. Last time I tried on, a few years ago, I let it get too dry and had nothing out of it at all. At the moment I favour getting them from the local fields - we have been quite successful in finding them but so far quite nervous about collecting and eating them.

Oysters on a loo roll - sound interesting. Note to self: must investigate this further.
