wishful thinking I fear - the only effective way to reduce food miles is if they cost more.
Unfortunately, oil prices have crashed in the current recession, so this is unlikely to happen in the short term. No government has the balls to increase fuel prices. And the fairtrade people will cry foul if we do go local and effectively pull the plug on their overseas projects.

I buy Ecover products and wonder how you heard about them testing on insects. I have looked on their website and they state that they do not test on animals. Do you have inside info? If it is true, then I would think again about buying their products.

I believe that Ecover test their producs in water that contains micro organisms. This is to check that when their producs are flushed down the toilet or put down the sink, they dont damage the ecosystem.

I have no problem with this sort of experimentation myself. Better that poisoning our waterwats with other less careful products.

I agree. We kill micro-organisms all the time in the interests of good health (anti b's; disinfectants, washing machine; cooking etc) and no-one seems to worry about that. Let's keep things in perspective.
Ecover seems to me to be a pretty good product.
