Seed growing test - help needed urgently!

Post: # 150284Post digiveg »

Hedgewizard and Digiveg are gathering data for a book... We're looking for polytunnel owners dotted here and there around the country who would agree to plant a couple of seeds of 'Igloo', a delicious and compact cauliflower, in their tunnel on the 25th of this month. We'd then really appreciated hearing about how things go, and most specifically the date on which you harvest them. If you'd like to take part, write back and I'll send you a few seeds for free (they're from Garden Organics).

Done... all be it at 8.50 pm... I've had a busy day.

So what is the test looking at? and why today? and why this variety? and why polytunnels? and what is the book going to be about? (other than growing cauliflower in a PT)....and.... well I'm just curious in general really

I've resurrected this old thread because I've just seen a new book

http://www.green-shopping.co.uk/how-to- ... round.html

It's by hedgewizard and digiveg!

Don't know if our cauliflower experiments helped at all but that was part of their research. I hope we were helpful.

Just had a load of books so can't afford it at the moment but I think I'll put it on my Christmas list.

Mine did absolutely nothing :(
But this year, in the same place I put a couple of plants in from old seeds (Yeah, I know, I was pushed for space) and they were wonderful!

So I have no idea what happened to the experimental ones, but I know that in future all caulis are going in the polytunnels now!

The veg grower I do a bit of work for here grows all caulis in the field - the problem is more that at some point they all seem to take off like mad (depending on weather, so there isn't much you can about it), and then you get a lot of "overblown" ones (as we only pick once a week, and that isn't enough in certain weather conditions). Some varieties do better than others, of course - I'd never heard of Igloo before.

It didn't do very well here either - we got two plants from the five seeds which grew about 3" high and developed curds about 1.5-2" wide!
Did anyone else let them know - I did but probably a while after it was any use to them, but I got a nice email back thanking me.

I'm glad they got their book published though and thinking we may have a some small input.

I didn't get any seed although I see above that I mentioned I would be willing to try.

I trust that they got some info from my postings as I seem to remember that when I first started posting on here, most people with tunnels left them empty all winter. :dontknow:

My tunnels and greenhouses have always been the opposite, chock full to the gunnels (or is it gunwhales ?) summer and winter alike.
