Otherwise Bonsai wouldn't work, would it ?

I've just seen an avocado tree for sale at

http://www.crosscommonnursery.co.uk/pla ... page=5&sL=

OH won't buy it for me, so you'll have to tell us about the hundreds of fruit you've had off it - then maybe he'll change his mind.

Sounds like a plan..... :angel12:

Green Aura, why would you buy one? They are really easy to grow:

1) Eat an avacado, (preferbly organic  )

2) Wash the stone

3) push a cocktail stick into each side, about half way up, just far enough so it'll take it's weight

4) sit it on a bottle or jar of water with just the bottom 1/4 in the water

5) keep the water topped up & when the roots fill the jar,

6) pot into mulit purpose in a large pot

7) pot on when it out grows the pot

8) when it reaches 2M/6ft (ie after about a year) give to friend with two storey conservatory!

Or flog on a well known interweb aution site to those who don't realise how easy they are to grow

Of course it won't be on dwarfing root stock, but I reckon the bonsai route should do the trick; my mate's really dinky bonsai apple produces tiny apples!

If you look at Green Aura's link for buying an Avocado you will see that they are grafted trees that are 1m tall and produce fruit.
I grew a satsuma from seed and it took 8 years before it fruited, but if you buy a grafted citrus they are probably in fruit when you buy them, at about 2 years old.
It's the "grafted" bit that's important.

I looked into it before and there was an issue with having several other avacado trees within a mile, and something about the tree has to be 10 years old before it produces anything :? I'll have a look and see if I can find the info again.

ETA - I think this is the website, well looks handy anyway.... I can't remember where I read about pollination though
