Planting after Pigs

Post: # 149314Post Irishpioneer »

Hi there, I am putting 4 pigs on a 3/4 acre site from now until probably September, after they are in the freezer I would love to use the ground to over
winter vegetables, can anyone tell me which veg would be good??

I live in Southern Ireland, literally next to the sea, it is a fairly exposed site and faces south,
we never get snow and have very little frosts....I was thinking of maybe a root vegetable becsue of the gale force winds we get ??
Any information would be really grateful

After our pigs had left their patch beautifully turned over, and clear of all weeds, grasses and roots - we planted potatoes, turnips, various squashes, gherkins and beans.
All of these will do well as they are happy with fresh-ish manured ground, you may find it is too fresh for root veg like carrots and parsnips which prefer really well rotted ground, and also much looser soil than a pig leaves it - you may find that the top couple of feet of soil are turned over, but the pigs running around can stomp it quite solid underneath - so things like potatoes will loosen it up again.
