I remember also being shocked when I found that out. It's all a case of good marketing and bad labelling really. Free to range does not necessarily mean actually free ranging. Have a look at all the different options next time you're in a supermarket. There are very few if any that aren't very ambiguous. Except maybe the t$%(0 value ones which clearly state that they are from caged hens (at least the last time I was in my sister's house that's what she had - her daughter is terrified that if she buys organic eggs she might find a bit of a beak in the egg sometime. I'm still working on trying to persuade her otherwise!)
