Castile soap query

Post: # 149191Post Loobyloo »

Hi Folks,

As some of you may or may not be aware my OH and myself are heading off round the country Wwoofing in a few short weeks.

We want to try and take as few bottles of toiletries etc as possible. Not only from a packing view but also as we will be staying with people with different views and standards of greeness (!? you know what I mean!) we want to make sure we won't upset people with the chemicals and packaging that we use.
I have already bought natural deodorants for us and invested in a mooncup but suddenly hit upon the idea that perhaps liquid castile soap might be the perfect thing to use for, well, more or less everything: Soap, shampoo etc and when we're camping in between places: washing up liquid and laundry detergent.

Having never used it before I just wanted to guage a few opinions on how good it is for all these things and where the best place to buy it would be?

Thanks in advance folks!

Loobyloo xx

Yes, it can be used for all these things, and is very concentrated - I bought some from a healthfood store, it is a HUGE bottle, maybe a litre, cost about £12, unscented and is very, very runny. I made it into a shower gel and it just runs away from you, which is sad... but it works great in one of those foamers (tried to find a link but the shop I bought it from doesn't do them anymore :? )

You can use that oliva soap for everything too (not sure about dishes actually) and it is in solid form.

You can use a bar for washing body and hair and grate it and mix it with water for laundering and washing up.

The oliva stuff sounds good for when we're settled in one place again but I think a bar might be a bit messy to pack and carry round once its been used a few times. Thats why i was thinking the liquid as its easier to transport.

Dr Br*nners is lovely and you can use it for everything - the peppermint one is particularly good.

I second the Dr B soap. It comes in several fragrances so you can pick one you'll both be happy with. If you usually need conditioner for your hair make sure you carry it!

Actually a bar would probably be easier to carry around - much smaller and lighter than a bottle of liquid. All you need is a little box to carry it in, I use tupperware since I have so much of it from my days as a demonstrator but even a glass jar would work (although that would add to the weight obviously)

Sorry to crash the thread, but could someone please pm the full name of the Dr B soap. Sounds interesting, and I would like to see if I can get some locally.

Thanks Nikki

I don't quite understand why people aren't putting up the full name - it is Dr Bronners. It seems to be the most widely available liquid castile soap but I think it is manufactured in USA, you might be able to get a British brand if you have a look around.

I've had a good old search and only really been able to find the Dr Bronners stuff. Have ordered a bottle of T tree and a bottle of Almond and will see how we get on!

(cheapest I found was on 21stcenturyhealth.co.uk )
