Adding compost/manure to the veg patch

Post: # 146441Post Camile »

Hello,

in a bid to increase fertility/drainage of the veg path, I have plenty of well rotted/not that well rotted compost/manure (plenty of chicken one).

Now apart from the carrots, is there anything else that doesn't like being manured before ?

same question applies for inside the tunnel ..

I always get confused with that ...

Thanks,
Camile

Add parsnips to the list. I don't know of anything else. However I have still had my fair share of forked parsnips and the occasional carrot with 'legs' even on unmanured ground.

As a rule of thumb; all root veg are best grown in soil that was manured/compost treated, the season before. Well rotted compost makes a excellent mulch for all veg. Farm-yard manure needs to be left 'standing' for approx 6 months before application, leaf-mulch;12 months. Dead leaves put into binbags, & filled with water makes a good liquid fertiliser ( after approx 6 mths), but would need to be diluted. Ash from coal fires is excellent for adding acidity to soft fruit beds. Ash from wood fires is a good general additive, partiularely on 'limey' soil. Chimney soot is a good all-purpose soil-mix, if left in a pile for approx 12 mnths, first. Phew!! Can't think of anymore right now, but i'm sure there are others.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

Hi 3M and Pumpy,

thanks for that .. so it's basically carrot and parsnips that I shouldn't manure then .. happy days ..

this year I managed to make enough compost/manure for all my veg .. and indeed it has matured for more than 6 months for the youngest hip .. so should be good .. hopefully ..
