With the self sufficincy thing coming into the fore again & people looking for other forms of meat would anybody consider guinea pig for eating as that is what they were originally bred for

i've never tried it but i have no objection - i can't see the moral difference between gp and rabbit.

a neighbour who has spent a lot of time in south america got some for just this purpose but i don't think he had much success, if i find out why i'll let you know.

Very boney in my experience, and troublsome to both prepare and eat. Rabbits are a better bet in my view as they are a lot hardier, a lot more easy to feed and lay down a great deal more meat. The flavour is OK though, particularly when fricassé.

They are brilliant lawn mowers.

I once stayed with a friend in a village where a family of guinea pigs had gone feral! It was rather charming, watching them trotting round the garden in single file.
The village also had peacocks that would sit with their tails in the road, and watch cars run over the feathers! (Not very bright, peacocks).
"The best way to get real enjoyment out of the garden isto put on a wide straw hat, hold a little trowel in one hand and a cool drink in the other, and tell the man where to dig."

Apparently, guinea pigs are best cooked when they are baked in clay - a bit like tandoori style... never tried them, but I have a friend who is desperate to!

Think I'll stick to rabbits - guinea pigs are just too cute!
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden
