Where to buy cheap ordinary jeans in England?

Post: # 14648Post Millymollymandy »

I'm after some normal jeans i.e. no glitter, no 1970s embroidered flowers etc! And definitely not the green sludge effect either - I can do that quite easily for free!

It's ladies jeans I'm after, just ordinary ones for working in the garden in. Like the £9 ones they were selling in M&S when I was there in November but as usual the only ones left were tiny or huge sizes. :( I don't know any other shops to try.

What about the charity shops? Linda has gotten some very nice, quite cheap jeans there....

I'd forgotten charity shops! I must go and look for some winter woolies - if they have them in May - but then I don't suspect they are seasonal in their 'fashions'!

Asda and T***o both sell jeans that sound like they'd fit the bill for about £3 a pair.

If you chance upon a Primark they have cheap, good quality stuff as well.

Only thing to remember is that they were probably made by someone that was paid peanuts.

Personally I'd go with the charity shop version.

It's a dilemma though isn't it - this cheap clothing/food/whatever. We need to save money and buy cheaply but in doing so we are allowing this cheap labour to carry on... BUT... if we don't buy it does it mean that the people making them won't have a job at all??

I'll try Tescos then! That is sooooooo cheap! I'll buy 'em even if they don't fit and hold them up with blue twine!!

Hi Wormella

I realise that - it wasn't meant to be a dig at anyone.

My DP has bought them in the past from T***o too - they have actually lasted a surprisingly long time which does add to their credit.

The Primark ones are incredibly long-lasting, too... £4 last time I bought them. Men's sizes only, though.

I have sometimes bought, or tried to buy, 100% "ethical" ones; fair trade, organic, the full Monty. Problem is, you have to be below average weight to fit into them. Although half the female British population is above size 14, it's impossible to get those jeans in larger sizes! So I thought, seeing that I can't buy fair trade anyway, I might as well go for the cheap option and not increase the wealth of large companies like Wrangler or Levis.

It is, of course, an incitement to lose weight!

For larger ladies (or more comfort space) Asda at £4 is good value.

Wish I knew where to find them in Canada. Couldn't even find anything at the used shops. I had to settle for cords - glad they're back "in fashion" - but I still need new jeans soon.

Pop over the border? (joke) I don't know whereabout you are in Canada!

Do you mean they don't sell jeans in Canada, or they are all fashion jeans, or very expensive?

The cheapest I can find in the supermarkets here are about €25 for women, but they are 'fashion' jeans (hipster flares) and not what I want for everyday use in the garden! Plus hipsters are not very comfy if you have a tummy!

Can't you wear men's jeans? They must have some that are not hippy style... Or work wear; I rather like that, too, because they often have very useful pockets, and the material tends to be stronger. Definitely stronger than "ladies" jeans.

No, not really, because mens' jeans always have that great big baggy bit at the back of the waist (cos they don't have hips) so when you sit down it sticks out and looks rather daft. I suppose it might be a useful pouch to store things in, but what exactly I don't know!
