Growing veg in very limited space (and in containers)

Post: # 145956Post thecornflake »

So this is my third year, (second full year) of growing my own veg. I have for the last two years only had a very small patio, but done very well with everything in containers.

This year we have moved to a house with a bigger patio and a bit of lawn, however firstly it's rented and I can't just dig up the lawn and secondly the wife seems to think the kids might actually want to play in the garden. So I'm still restricted to containers on limited patio space. However I have a coupel of walls /fences I could grow things up...

Any clever ideas welcome. I also grow climbing french beans because of the crop per container space, one or two courgette plants and I succession plant carrots. I also have patio potato planters. I'd be interested in innovative ways to use the walls if there are any.

Oh, and peas and tomatoes are out because no-one else in the family likes them :(

Hi
There`s plenty of room..up (as they say)
Have a look at Vertigro.com for some inspiration. Simple stacked square pots with a tube down the middle. You could use a similar method with compost filled square planters.
Rotate alternate planters by 45 degrees and plant in the 4 corners.

Do you have space for some window boxes? Don't forget the front garden (if you have one).

Do you have a flat roof? You could put some pots on there (but make sure they're not too heavy).

Cheers

You could also grow things like patio apples and other fruit on really small rooting stock - maybe if your family can go out and pick something like that they may let you expand a bit.

What about applying for an allotment. That way the family/landlord can have their protected space and you could have growing freedom and - A SHED! Or whatever rocks your world.

Allotments are actually available in our town but I wouldn't have the time to use it properly.

My parents have allowed me some space in their large garden and I dug some of it over and planted some things last year but it was a bit late and they didn't do well. Their house is about 2 miles away and I go up there every couple of weeks anyway, plus they can keep an eye on it for me .

I'm planning on possibly using the space for giant sweetcorn this year amongst other things :flower:
