newbie today!

Post: # 14238Post albert onglebod »

Hello,
Im down in 'sunny' kent.
I started a veg garden last year although it didnt get much planted in it as it was head high brambles at the time. Now its mud and a few trees and I cant wait to get planting.
In my plastic greenhouse Ive got lettuce, broccoli and brussel sprouts started ,nine onions(from seed) ,5 rocket plants and 4 strawberry plants .
In the earth ;onion sets (overwintering and spring planted),Garlic,2 cabbages (they escaped the birds) a row of first early spuds and a row of early onward peas, last 2 newly sown.
In the house ; leeks started and tomatoes and aubergines sown.
I'd love to be self sufficient in fruit and veg so thats what im going to try for this year.

Sounds like you are on your way to be self sufficient in veg this year. You can't beat that first meal made entirely of your own stuff, amazing stuff.

Good luck with it all and any problems you have come to the right place to get some advice.

Thanks all.
Hopefully my carbon footprint will lower over the year too.
I did the CAT carbon gym test last year and it wasnt too bad. They havent got the test up there anymore but they did post me a CD with it on so I could carry on testing.
We've got the energy saving lightbulbs all over the house and try recycling most things. The OH rides a motor bike to work though which takes the score up quite a lot.

G'Day Albert & welcome to the site.

Andy's right - a meal made from your own stuff is special, good luck with getting your footprint down!

Great name albert onglebod, sounds like Englebert Humperdink (remember him?!!)

Welcome!

How do you stop everything eating your rocket? All bugs seem to like it and rarely leave any for me.
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

thanks again!
I think I just planted loads of Rocket shiney so there was more rocket than slugs. There is a row of it in the garden that was planted about last July. Its still going strong. At the start it looked a bit weedy and I didnt pull many leaves (I didnt want to kill it so I left about 4 per plant).I did put broken egg shells all over the place too. The rocket in the greenhouse is in a deep container(salvaged from the old fridge) so out of reach of creepy crawlies.

The name comes from a poem my daughter learnt.I thought it sounded a bit like a name for a scarecrow so stored it up for fututre use.
