Anti-Valentines gift

Post: # 141526Post Annpan »

I have a friend, who is a very good friend, and when I was last chatting to her we were bemoaning the fact that she is single. I think you can have these conversations with old friends who have been married for years, but not with friends who are in new relationships.

I thought I would cheer her up by making her an Anti-Valentines gift.... I had a look on anti-craft but didn't find anything, but TBH it is a bugger of a site to negotiate.....

Thought about a small cross-stitch, or an embroidered badge/brooch, or something....

Any ideas?

Well, I know one group of girls I used to hang with would celebrate "Singles' Appreciation Day". I'll try not to fall afoul of the filters here, but they would "journey to an establishment where they could observe gentlemen in various states of undress" (does that work?)

Me, I'd rather have chocolate and the movie Labyrinth, at home.

Don't know if either of those ideas help.

Last year I gave her a goodie bag containing a Johnnie Depp DVD (Sleepy Hollow), a bag of microwave popcorn and a big bar of chocolate - not sure I can think of a nicer way of spending valentines day myself  I might go for that again then....

We don't have a filter for strip club  .... but there are none in Scotland :( well... unless it is women you want to see in the nuddy. Not sure my OH would be happy with me accompaning her to such an establishment anyway :?

New growing bulbs in a pot?
Those wee tiny daffodils are lovely - and last longer than chocolate! (Don't I know it!)

And I took the one less travelled by
And that has made all the difference.

Home baking mmmmmmmmmmm cakes & biscuits & it has the added bonus of love being put into it even if it isn't the romantic form of the emotion.

Knitty have a pattern for an anatomical heart up this month. 've started making it and it works up pretty quickly (even for a slow knitter like me).

Its similar to the Anticraft's Stabbity Stab, but easier to read the instructions. Maybe you could knit her one, present it with a bottle of wine and some chocolate with instructions to stamp on it and think of men?

Or...how about a voodoo stuffy doll thingy with pins for strategic points?

I'm looking for non-lovey dovey valentines cards. I think there's a big gap in the market - i want one that says 'i quite like you...you're alright' not 'i love you so much, you're wonderful' because...well...that's a bit scary isn't it..!

I'm sorry - this may to sound reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaalllllllly callous - it's not meant to be - I mean it in the most positive way...

If she's bemoaning the fact she's single then I take it she would like to be with a partner - in which case she could decide to do something about it so you could give her a talking to (nicely obviously - and i mean that with some irony too - better add smilies :hugish: - black and white text on forums with peeps you dont know can be interpreted so many ways..)

You could get her Louise Hay's Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway (- as fear is generally what holds folks back either of the unknown or memories of past negative experiences). A mate of mine decided she was fed up being single - told us we were all useless mates (nicely) because we didn't introduce her to any interesting single men and that she was off to find new mates (again, I hope you can read the irony in that - she was semi joking) - She did though - she (was very brave) and went off and joined different activity clubs, went out for dinner/ socialising afterwards in big groups of folk and after a year - has been happily seeing someone for the last 6 months - taking things at its own pace. He's lovely and fits in well with all her existing mates which is great too

If she's happy being single then the celebration of being single sounds like a good way forward and you can ignore all my blethers above.

and chocolate NEVER goes amiss, lol :occasion5:

mm yeh - i was thinking - if she is sad about 'not having a valentine' - does you pointing it out help?

I hate the whole valentines thing anyway.. its just frought with potential problems

at school it was about bragging - the 'popular' girls showing off.. yadayada

when I had a 'boyfriend' it was about obligation

when unhappily married, it really did show up how lousey things were

when divorced and single again - that was some of the best times, because I could ignore it if I wanted - far better to have nothing happen because you decide it than because your partner poos on your plans...

Now happiliy settled with someone, it becomes hard to mark the occasion because everywhere you would like to go has some ghastly themed pink event on

in recent years we have made it into a different sort of celebration. either a party with friends where everyone brings something red or heart shaped to eat, or just my little family and we and my son have a laugh making heart shaped pizzas and biscuits etc
Red

I like like minded people... a bit like minded anyway.. well people with bits of their minds that are like the bits of my mind that I like...

do you crochet? there's a fabby pattern on craftster at the mo for an amigorumi heart.

as for "proper" valentines, we are celebrating in our traditional manner... offloading soph onto my mum (who offered lol!), getting takeaway and a library DVD and some beer, eating, watching the dvd and drinking beer all in the nuddie and without interruption from our little 3 year old shortstuff.

mmmm bliss.
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very

Well, she's not happy about being single, every guy she meets and falls for turns out to be a b*&$%£^ or sometimes just a weirdo.

Fee... the stamping heart sounds like fun, but not entirely a healthy attitude.... :?

Fruitcake - I like the idea of that book, and I have been holding back giving her a 'talking too' .... but I am walking a fine line between sympathising and rubbing it in. (it sucks to be alone when you don't want to be, but I am very happily married)

Last year on Valentines she babysat for us all day while we went to a funeral. This year OH and I are planning to spend a quiet weekend together, with E.... but I think if I was alone, I would like a wee something from someone...no?

i'll second the suggestions of home baking and a DVD- something home made is always cheering to receive, and a DVD will be something to do in the evening (although probably better to have a comedy than a romance!)

To avoid this years 'festivities' me and some friends are heading up a mountain for some walking and camping- no tacky hearts or cards up there! (maybe you could give her a tent!)

I think anything will do the trick really- it's being thought of that counts

I hope i won't be getting a valentines card...i'm not sending any...

Arg...what if he gets me a card and i don't have one for him? I don't do lovey dovey, and i definitely do not use the L-O-V-E word unless i really mean it - hence the not wanting a slushy valentines card.

Back to the thread...My Friend bought me a book of s3x spells last year. I didn't do any of them but it had some pretty good stuff in it. There's a book called something like 'How to Hex an Ex', which is supposed to be really funny and empowering - i can't remember if that's the actual title though.

Or...a book on how to crochet along with yarn and a hook and the pattern for the beanis from the Anticraft! Or...vouvhers for Lovehoney, or another online adult supplier...or Ann Summers...

i have to say, one of the best valentines i ever got was an antivalentine. i was at college, had just broken up out of a 4 month relationship (hey i was 17, that's a long time!!) my friend Neil decided to cheer me up and bought me a really crappy plastic rose with the pound he had in his pocket after buying his lunch at the local shop. i was sooooo appreciative cos he gave it to me just to make me happy. :hugish: i think i still have it in a box somewhere; it may have been crap and cost a pound but it meant sooooo much lol!!

(btw: he wasn't angling for anything by giving me rose on valentines, he was in a relationship with a rather nice trainee accountant called Justin...)
